The pink areas are where apartments are banned. Does that look like they are allowed to build? Developers don’t actually care that much about zoning or single stair. Yimbys don’t have a lot of developers in their ranks. It’s mostly people who just want more affordable housing and better cities.
Chris (@chrisbybikes.bsky.social) reply parent
Sure. But until that communist revolution, we have the private market and they should be allowed to build.
Chris (@chrisbybikes.bsky.social) reply parent
We have a housing shortage. Who’s going to build the housing if not developers? The Amish?
Chris (@chrisbybikes.bsky.social) reply parent
You get more affordable units by building more units. Modern single stair buildings are very safe and how they build affordable social housing all over the world.
Chris (@chrisbybikes.bsky.social)
There's been a cultural shift since I was a kid in the 80s, where parents believe kids are only safe if they are in a car. And in someways they are correct because we made the roads only for cars so that no one is safe if they aren't in one, and even then the safety is an illusion.

The best way to ban tenant screenings is to make housing plentiful so landlords are begging for tenants.

I just took my son to Taco Bell in Burbank and two kids just brought their bikes inside. It's good to see kids enjoy bike freedom. But I didn't even think about how parking mins effected design (which was just like this).

I battled with some of those suburban NY NIMBYs when that NY TOD bill was up for a vote and they are on another level. They don’t bother with any of that left nimby 2 step. They are just straight up racist. Gotta respect the honesty I guess, but I’d really like to see them lose.

You’re lucky. Our Thai place like that in Silver Lake went thru some price discovery and is like 3x as much now and twice as crowded. Good for them, they are great people. But I miss it.

That moment on the show was so jarring. It feels like a housing anecdote that can break containment and help build the support to get SB79 across the line.

Of course pro builders are going to be the ones who can take this on. A corporate builder could easily and most likely is a small business builder. Building a house from the ground up in no joke. Didn't you buy a house from a corporate builder? Banning this would lower the value of their land.

This is kind of the opposite of an Echo Park example where a burger stand owned by a white family catered to the older Latino population. Now it's being replaced by a Mexico City Churro place that will cater to the newer upper middle class white population.

I often think about this reply she made in an argument with Darrel after Roe was overturned and he was yelling about how we need to build to let in red state refugees. She said something like "It's true our housing policy means less people can live here but..." She deleted all those too. She knows.

One thing I was thinking about is how other nonrprofits can have such ridiculous mission creep they destroy their orgs integrity like Surfrider fighting housing, Sunrise Movement come to mind. The Tenants Org can't even widen to talk about safe streets. They are so narrow it's ridiculous.

It was truly horrifying to hear from people in nonprofits and government trying desperately to house migrants in blue states over the last few years, who simply could not find any place to house them, because barely any new housing existed and prices were being driven higher and higher.
Chris (@chrisbybikes.bsky.social) reply parent
I think the smug replies are really to the car brained tenants activists argument than to the tenants. It sucks for the tenants, but the trade offs for new housing is worth it overall and I hope they get the max 275 off their rent.
Chris (@chrisbybikes.bsky.social) reply parent
Tenants can get up to $275 off rent depending on parking issues. Are you really saying this should be banned? Is the issue ADU conversion or is it free street parking policy? I think banning ADU conversion is an exaggeration of the issue.
Chris (@chrisbybikes.bsky.social) reply parent
You do get a rent reduction for the loss of parking.

I've got nearly 30 years in LA and this has never happened to me either. Tenants do receive a deduction in rent for losing their parking.
