The NBA itself gets ~40-50% of WNBA gross income. A deal leftover from the beginning of the league when he he NBA operated the whole deal. The money is there to pay the players.
My understanding of the was incorrect. The NBA’s subsidy is they don’t take as much cash from the gross revenue as they are contracted to receive. What a sweetheart deal for the NBA, who must have long since earned back their initial expenses.
The NBA take a percentage of top line revenue! That is not an investment, that’s robbery at this point. Their so-called subsidy is simply the difference between what they could take and what they do take. The W might not be operating at a loss if they didn’t have to support this legacy deal.
The more I read about the NBA’s straight up exploitation of the WNBA the more sickening it is. The league has been around nearly 30 years. The NBA has gotten their investment back. They are not pouring money into the W. They are taking it out. That money should be going to players and owners. /1
There is a lot of misguided commentary about the pay of the WNBA players. This isn’t about the operating losses of the league (which are partially subsidized by the NBA), but rather the share of revenue that goes to player salaries. The exploitation is real and can easily be corrected.
