A lot of the big complainers about Bluesky are basically describing Threads but their real issue with Bluesky is that they specifically dislike around 12 people who they could ratio on Twitter if it still existed. It’s basically niche influencer drama pretending to be about policy

If the concern is that we will no longer live in a consensus reality, then I honestly double-dog-dare you to look me in the eyes and tell me that mass-scale platforms like Facebook, TikTok, and X were meeting that concern in a positive way

For most of humanity’s existence we were not required to receive a push notification every time somebody on the other side of the planet did something cruel or used a word you don’t like. I am pretty sure that NOT knowing these things is what the emotional centers in our brains prefer

Honestly the development of broken-up non-centralized platforms with their own identities is probably a healthy step for the world. It brings down the temperature a tad on the idea of being constantly exposed to shit you hate, which has been degrading to the human experience.

I don’t wanna discount the right-wing anti-city noise machine, it’s real and it’s very loud and persuasive, and it deeply sucks and I’d personally love to dismantle it. But even if Fox News went off the air tomorrow, that doesn’t solve homelessness. Home prices would solve homelessness.

Homelessness has been on the rise ever since the US abandoned the premise of funding public housing. Basically every nation on Earth to tackle this problem did it via public housing, yet Dems are still beholden to the 1990s anti-public-housing worldview. Market solutions failed, tho, so now what?

The Republican policy is clear, but inhuman: put them in prison or let them die. One wing of the left is advocating for major financial realignments to resolve this problem the humane way, but they’re fighting the corporate wing (Newsom etc) who don’t want that level of economic transformation.

This is 100% factually true but the problem is, every single person saying “crime” is a problem actually means “homelessness.” And this actually IS a Democratic problem, bc the party is at war with itself over how to respond, and the problem is worst in our cities.

Constructing the amount of housing we'd need for this would bring down the overall price of housing, and many fortunes (including the average middle-to-upper-class American's net worth) are predicated on that absolutely never happening. So we'll literally kill people instead of doing it.

What's our economy set up to spend that amount of money on instead? A.I. data centers, it seems, and police. Both of those things are important to building the walled cities of the future that will keep The Undesirables out. That's the plan that's been made and it seems we're sticking to it.

Anyway, if you'd like a history of the concept of bipartisanship in American politics, I wrote one a few years ago. Politicians didn't start talking this way until fairly recently. newrepublic.com/article/1635...

Most Americans would be surprised to learn how recently our positivity about bipartisanship came to be. Ahead of the 1960 presidential election, for instance, some political analysts anxiously warned the public against a repeat of the divided government Washington had seen for the majority of Eisenhower’s term. In January of that year, the subhead of a New York Times article by the journalist Douglass Cater said that the split in partisan control of the White House and Congress had “given ‘bipartisanship’ a new—and disturbing—twist.” “Protracted bipartisanship leads to a minimal kind of politics with everything played in low key,” Cater argued. “It reduces the incentive for bold, new initiatives on the part of the Administration in power.” Cater even suggested that bipartisanship might undermine American foreign policy by producing a broad but muddy consensus on national priorities. “It may be questioned whether … ‘bipartisanship’ presents a proper image abroad,” he mused. “What our allies and enemies both may have occasion to wonder is who speaks for America in an effective way.” This was far from a fringe perspective. Upon Kennedy’s election, the historian Henry Graff echoed Cater in another piece for the Times: “In domestic matters, bipartisanship is, naturally, impossible and undesirable. Although some legislation will, as heretofore, enjoy bipartisan support, our politics remain by nature partisan.” And a full eight years later, the Times ran an editorial making the same argument. “Except in time of war ... history suggests that self-conscious bipartisanship does not work very well in this country,” the editors wrote. “A peacetime coalition could only serve to blur the lines of responsibility to no real purpose.” Of all the sea changes that have occurred over the last half-century in American politics, the shift from a political mainstream skeptical or ambivalent about bipartisanship to a mainstream that celebrates it is among the most under-examined. The creation of our current paradigm is a very long story—one that seems to begin, as a great many things did last century, with World War I.

I am honestly curious why everybody is so certain that someone is dying because of a picture of his hand, when the obvious explanation is that he got a bruise there, as elderly people do, and he did a bad job covering it, as vain and incompetent people do

Hey - Image creators. You likely have received a mail from someone claiming they're at image. This very much feels like a phishing scam. Don't click the link, and spread word to collaborators.

Can folks do me a favor? I was on Bluesky early & it was great. Mostly. I hit the eject button in January. I came back, many colleagues are here, but still don’t know I am. I co-created Halt and Catch Fire. I write TV & comics. Here’s two favorite set photos. Repost? I am in the wilderness.

the actual communication problem democrats have is this: their most prominent national figures filter everything through focus grouped lines and are incapable of plain speech

The other thing is that it is impossible to sanitize your own official language to satisfy right wingers, because their goal is to be upset by language. So they will just dig up an old Tumblr or fabricate something to get upset about

The patterns of behavior we all exhibit on social media are just SO bad and SO easily exploited and I gotta just wish and pray that someone will come up with a substantive alternative, I guess?

Who would do the latter? Who WOULDN’T. Republicans, foreign states, another Dem trying to keep their lane open long-term… Bluesky is a target-rich environment for this sort of campaigning because people here have already established they can be swayed into making choices by polarizing rhetoric.

All this Newsom shit you’re seeing here for the last few weeks? It’s intentional. The Blue Wave “we must unite behind Gavin” shit is driven by bots, and it’s either Newsom himself doing brand awareness, or it’s an actor who knows Newsom is divisive and is leaning into splitting Dem voters.

Was just thinking about exactly this as I opened this app (lol busted), specifically on the subject of how few people on here seem to understand that the same ideological manipulation campaigns that make Twitter unbearable are happening here too, trying to cause left-wing fractures.

no love for John Bolton but the fact that the home of a cable news green roomer got raided seems to have finally alerted a great many people to the fact that Trump just might be a dangerous authoritarian in a way that sending a occupying army to the nation's capital didn't

I know there's a lot of controversy about the Cracker Barrel logo, so I worked up a new option that should be good with everyone... The barrel is back, but it's now guarded by Scubble, The Cracker Goblin. I also worked up a new slogan for the company!

The thing about Mamdani in this moment is that he is telling people that they do not have to simply accept what's on offer [and you see how much powerful interests HATE that]. He is doing this in just a couple of areas. Others could do the same focusing on the areas of life that most speak to them.
