I feel like the problem is that democracy isn't popular enough and fascism isn't unpopular enough. Much worse on the right, but it's everywhere. Until that changes, I don't think the Democrats can talk their way into power, no matter what words they use.

Last summer I broke my foot while on a family trip including a 3 year old. Because our flight was delayed we missed our connection, were rerouted, arrived 24 hours late. I was in so much pain. We aren't traveling this summer.

I think each faculty member has to balance a lot of competing values and the right choice for one may be wrong for another. My bottom line is that attacking intellectuals is a hallmark of fascist regimes. Let's not add to it. Keep the shame directed at the Board where it belongs.

Classes or academic programs that have to be canceled will mean students will take longer to graduate, go into more debt, etc. Or perhaps the university will hire more adjunct who can be more easily exploited and controlled.

I see it differently. Assuming the faculty are motivated only by money is a mistake. I care about my students and my colleagues who are depending on me to be there when school starts in a couple weeks. I expect the Columbia faculty feel similarly.

Community college and regional public universities need more coverage. Also people who can speak to the economic impact on communities and states if these public institutions are diminished. People who can speak to how state legislatures are planning (or not) to address the attack on higher ed.

Here's a thought: Since Trump voters tend to vote for candidates who defund education at the state and local levels from early childhood on up, perhaps this affects the quality of education their children receive and the opportunities available to them.

Absolutely. It's hard to get people to understand that lots of people (including educated people) actively support Trump. Most of his supporters are not naive or ignorant --at least not about what Trump is doing. The first step to getting out of this is recognizing where we are.

Trying to escape reality, I recently read two books by Paula Hawkins, The Girl on the Train and The Blue Hour. I thought The Girl on the Train was better, but the Blue Hour was creepier. #booksky

Today I'm thinking about the people working in understaffed NWS offices and all the government employees managing critical systems without sufficient support. And of course the victims of the resulting tragedies, present and future.
