They worked for the DoD. Anyone who obeyed the Governor would be charged with failure to obey a lawful order. Now, while that was an appropriate tactic then, the current administration knows about it and can use it.
There's a bigger issue. George Wallace tried to use the NG to prevent the integration of Alabama public schools. Shortly after he called them up, then President Kennedy signed the order bringing the NG into federal status. They no longer worked for the state.
