About to do 4 days, 3 nights backpacking in Gifford Pinchot National Forest, around Mt. Margaret north of Mt. St. Helen’s. So Trump needs to make it through to Thursday evening. All I ask
I like talking about things that start with “p” like politics (pragmatic progressive), psychedelics, psychoanalysis, philosophy, Portland, the Pacific Northwest & “m”—music, mushrooms. Parent of 2 teens. Daimista (IYKYK).

My daughter has probably already heard a lot of it, she’s consumed vast amounts of music. Her brother less so, but he’s gotten really into playing drums recently & likes punk & emo so who knows? My daughter is an aspiring musician. She’s been making her own music since 2020.

Constitutional protections for the minority who choose to live in dying rural areas of course, but no weighing the scales in their favor. Alas, hard to see us having the opportunity to make those changes without a lot of suffering & harm first.
Mr. Chimpanzy (@cyanescens.bsky.social) reply parent
In a proper democracy where the senate & electoral college weren’t features of the constitutional system giving rural areas far more power per capita than cities & suburbs these problems would largely take care of themselves. The majority would decide policy & resource distribution.

Two years ago met up with a high school friend I hadn’t seen in about 30 years. He filled me in on all the mutual acquaintances who’d died of substance abuse, ended up in prison or on the streets. He was unequivocal: it was a shithole that wrecked the lives of a lot of the people who grew up there

Oregon voted by just shy of 70% in 1998 to go to exclusively vote by mail and it’s worked great. It would probably be approved by about the same margin if put to a vote again & every single person voting against it would be an Eastern Oregonian who wants to secede and join Idaho anyways.
Mr. Chimpanzy (@cyanescens.bsky.social) reply parent
Here in Oregon we voted in 1998 by 69.4% to move to exclusive vote by mail. It is extremely popular here. 7 other states have since moved to do the same. It works really well. Trading it away is not something any Democrat should be willing to countenance.
Mr. Chimpanzy (@cyanescens.bsky.social) reply parent
Oregon has been exclusively vote by mail for coming up on 30 years. I genuinely think that a concerted effort by the federal government to take it from us is a sign to start making serious secession plans.

It is not something that can be conquered nor a problem to be solved. Society as a collective project is endless maintenance of a vast engine that, left to its own devices, will tear itself apart under its own forces and is beset by an adversary that lurks in the hearts of all men.
