Why does this discomfort seeing wretches outside your palanquin never lead to an urge to fix that problem by finding a way to direct a little more money to the poor such that they are no longer too poor for you to comfortably look at?
Dailey (@dailey247.bsky.social) reply parent
You are correct, this has made me mad. Aged kinda poorly, the same way a lot of classic films seem stilted and glacially paced. But had some pretty groundbreaking elements, and I think a more faithful TV adaptation with modern sensibilities could be good as an anthology series.

Golf the winner finishes & the guys behind him need to finish up if they want their checks. I think some olympic/x-games judged sports where the winner has a final run/routine in hand but even a zero wins. Bill James(?) had a chart of time/scores where a basketball lead can't physically be lost.

Agree, and this is part of my point. There are internal inconsistencies in ~every person's politics. I am libertarian about drug policy and downright authoritarian when it comes to noise pollution. I don't get to just call all of my ideas "left" because I want to sit at the cool kids table.
Dailey (@dailey247.bsky.social) reply parent
A small, entrenched group should have power to obstruct what's done on property they don't own to cater to their own desires is exactly what I'm talking about. That's called Conservatism! As to any point that leans on the phrase "greedy developers," just imagine I posted PiggyPoopBalls under that.
Dailey (@dailey247.bsky.social) reply parent
I would only say it isn't real in the sense that NIMBYism can not be "left." At its heart it strives for nothing to change, despite obvious benefit to the masses, so that a small group might not be affected by progress. This is a reactionary movement, regardless of how it dresses itself up.

Dailey (@dailey247.bsky.social) reply parent
That's completely wrong. Again, just look at what the far right has been doing forever. They run complete whack jobs with no chance, but over time it moves the window and makes the incumbents - literally - afraid. Most elected R's do not agree with the MAGA agenda but they won't cross it now.
Dailey (@dailey247.bsky.social) reply parent
None of these assumptions needs to be true for a primary challenge to be useful. The challenge itself pushes even above-replacement incumbents to take stronger positions and actually use their power. This is what the far right has been doing to the Republican party for decades, and it worked.
