I think it's unconscionable for someone to have the power to kick people off late night talkshows and not do Fallon first.
I have a Bluesky account for my professional career. This is, uh, definitely not that one.

The right has been attacking Disney for years, hyper focusing on perceived grievances and calling the company aggressively woke. The Desantis feud was very public, for example. So, sure Bob Iger, instead slap the face of the base that has supported you all these years. Great decision making there.

I recall talking years ago to a self-identified "moderate" who claimed that the left always went after individuals in their quest of cancel culture while the right only tried to cancel large companies (which they said was fair game). I think they mentioned college speakers at the time?

Overall, I feel like a March shutdown would have far more impact and had more public support. I think Dems had more leverage then -- and Schumer's caving not only squandered it, but also strengthened a narrative that establishment Dems serve billionaire interests and not the people.
memory leak (@danglingpointer.bsky.social) reply parent
Those of us tuned into Bluesky and small business owners see the tsunami of damage coming with tariffs, but I don't think most Americans feel the worst of it yet. And Epstein Files are enraging but not seeing their relevance for a shutdown. In fact, the Republican congress took a vacation over them.
memory leak (@danglingpointer.bsky.social) reply parent
My understanding is courts are considered essential services. You're saying they would stop running? And you're implying the government wouldn't reopen until Congress reopened it, right? But a lingering shutdown would have been really unpopular and Republicans would have faced pressure to reopen.
memory leak (@danglingpointer.bsky.social) reply parent
One thing I'm wondering is if avoiding the shutdown was the right call earlier this year, what has changed to justify actually going through with it now?
memory leak (@danglingpointer.bsky.social) reply parent
I listened to his reasoning and read many articles arguing both sides. I myself believe had the government shut down, it would have prevented the obscene funding of ICE, hindered the damage DOGE did, given Dems more negotiating power, and could have galvanized democratic voters on the ground.
memory leak (@danglingpointer.bsky.social) reply parent
Agreed. There are surprisingly simple ways to change our government system that would counter so many of its dysfunctional properties, e.g. jerrymandering, corrupt supreme court, unbalanced voter representation. But those with the power to change the system benefit from it. Change will need a fight.
memory leak (@danglingpointer.bsky.social) reply parent
Schumer was already given a chance to do this earlier in the year and he threw it to the ground. I don't think he has it in him to be the fighter the future of the US needs right now. He says soft words, wrings his hands, and then votes as if we live in normal times. I'm not holding my breath.
