The media & public need to help ensure CPD complies.

Sort of. Carson was *Secretary* of HUD. That job has frequently gone to a politician, w/some having a housing background (Cisneros, eg) and others having none (Carson). The PD&R deputy job has almost always gone to someone w/ a housing research background who wasn't a politician.

Went to the local Ethiopian restaurant on the block. The food and service was, as ever, immaculate and welcoming. Chatted with the owner - food costs are up, customer traffic has collapsed, he can't get contractors to do needed repairs, staff are afraid to come in. His worst August in history.

I'd add that the market's missing of the subprime crisis (& resulting GFC) was not just about missing a "housing bubble". It was also about missing the huge surge in reckless & predatory subprime lending, which had major role in bubble/bust. Lots of consumer orgs & even Fed knew this was happening.

Yes the econ dept is now named after hedge fund guy Ken Griffin (who left Chicago for Florida screaming “taxes, crime!”), so they will likely do fine. And the business school (Booth) will do fine. I wouldn’t be surprised if they and/or their alum were involved in advising on the crypto investments.

A huge problem w/ Lisa Cook "fraud" stuff is that the way the term is being thrown around (by media) effectively equates identifying two residences as principal residences on mortgage applications as equivalent to major financial fraud that causes serious harm -- like the Trump kind of fraud.

There is a homeless gentleman who lives in a park near me in Chicago. He is a kind and gentle soul & will talk to anyone for a half hour or more as he has many life stories. I rarely have enough time to chat that long, but we often exchange waves. On top of everything else, I fear for his safety.
