Baja pitcher sage is an awesome host plant for all kinds of cool insects.
Milkweed gains. Sowed in late June, most plants are now about 5-6” talks. I’ve pinched some of the Narrowleaf, and soon the Kotolo will be ready for a good pinching. The other pots have showy milkweed that’s already stratified for a month. Sowed two days ago. #californianativeplants
Apparently they do pretty well. I have some P. Heterophyllus cultivars in another pot together with a Monardella. It’s an experiment, so we’ll see how it goes.

I’m finding that ChatGPT can actually be a useful adjunct to mental health, BUT ONLY if you know how to use it correctly. And ONLY if you’re willing to train it to call you out. If you clarify what values matter to you, and you insist the chat bot holds you to it, it can bring real clarity.

I’m probably out of my mind thinking this is a good idea, but I’m setting this ceanothus arboreus (not a cultivar) up to grow in my backyard. I moved it into a two gallon pot so it can stretch out through the summer. Also have mulch at the base to keep it cool. #californianaticeplanys
Monkeyflowers would have been a better choice everywhere but the bahiopsis and the brickellia. Oh well. Live and learn.
Lastly, this Brickellia californica is growing wider than planned due to some lateral branches at the base. But I’m not too worried about it - I’ll cut those back in fall to help it attain more of a fountain shape.

Looking at the numerous final instar monarch caterpillars that chowed their way through four two-gallon milkweed plantings, I feel confident saying that the population would rebound if every house in California did the same (with Narrowleaf or equivalent local).
