Google gets away with it: Won't have to divest Chrome, won't need to divest Android. Can't make exclusive search deals anymore but that feels like fixing yesterday's problem.

Meta created celebrity romance chatbot replicas of Taylor Swift, Scarlett Johansson and Selena Gomez. Reuters found these "parody" bots would generate hyperrealistic images of the women in lingerie with their legs spread and invite users to the women's homes.
In that context, sure. But "I was given a book" could be taken to mean anything from a gift to a grotty boring textbook handed out on the first day of school. May have to give it back. vs "I was gifted a book" ... someone gave me this book as a gesture; it is mine now etc etc

There's a way to stop this happening, which is to turn ChatGPT off. I'm not advocating that, but it's worth remembering. It is within OpenAI's power to do that. So the decision then is how many degrees from "off" are they willing to go in the name of safety. It currently seems to be too many.
Right. And further to that, OpenAI is already falling into using the framing Meta perfected, where it discussed Facebook/Insta as if they were organic beasts it inherited, rather than products it explicitly created.

I realize that “here’s what ChatGPT says” conclusions aren’t always useful. But it’s of note to me how the bot handles queries about the recent stories. Undermining some very good reporting. “Headline grabbing” indeed.
