Is there no depths these charlatans will not sink to? Despicable.
Used to make electricity for a living, now retired. Spending my time riding bikes and reading books. I can’t stop growing old but not sure I’m ready to grow up yet.

I’ve never had Afghan food. Looks fabulous. Glad you enjoyed it. Deeply jealous

And don’t forget, he has no credible idea how to stop the boats.

Interesting article. What you outline sounds very much like what the country needs; some long term thinking. I hope you are right that it is the government’s intention, that they do not get distracted and that it bears fruit quickly enough to positively influence the next election.
Dave Troland (@davet24.bsky.social) reply parent
I’m not English, so I don’t care, but Southgate’s record was the best since Alf Ramsey. The criticism was ludicrous.
Dave Troland (@davet24.bsky.social) reply parent
Very impressive. No one could have doubted her skill or determination but it is so impressive to get this level of endurance so quickly after competing in MTB for so long. Also how can someone 10kg lighter than me produce so much power - deeply jealous man here.
Dave Troland (@davet24.bsky.social) reply parent
Your absolutely correct the contrast between Sturgeon and Johnson could hardly have been more stark.
Dave Troland (@davet24.bsky.social) reply parent
I think this is more a measure of how biddable she is. As clear an indication she’s willing to say anything as long as she’s paid handsomely to say it. No integrity, only interested in money.
Dave Troland (@davet24.bsky.social) reply parent
🥳 brilliant 🤩
Dave Troland (@davet24.bsky.social) reply parent
Fantastic! Lucky you. Needless to say I’m jealous.
Dave Troland (@davet24.bsky.social) reply parent
I’m that age too.
Dave Troland (@davet24.bsky.social) reply parent
I’m absolutely thrilled for you. Keep winning 🏆
Dave Troland (@davet24.bsky.social) reply parent
Gorgeous picture. I had to have a bit of a double take because for a moment I thought I was looking at Van Gogh’s starry night. High time I had a holiday in France again.
Dave Troland (@davet24.bsky.social) reply parent
Thank you, you saved me the bother.
Dave Troland (@davet24.bsky.social) reply parent

Trump seems hell bent in making European integration, including UK inevitable. His isolationism is making it imperative for security and a Europe closely linked economically is more likely to stick together when one of there number is threatened. Struggling to see we actually have a choice.
Dave Troland (@davet24.bsky.social) reply parent
Both
Dave Troland (@davet24.bsky.social) reply parent
I think you’re right and that has framed Starmer’s public position. I assume that behind the scenes he’s been working with European partners to try and cover off the situation where US withdraws support. That’s what I’d have been doing and I think he’s at least as smart as me.
Dave Troland (@davet24.bsky.social) reply parent
Good luck with that fingers 🤞
Dave Troland (@davet24.bsky.social) reply parent
Similar. Edinburgh 2012 was my marathon. Last serious run was Glasgow half in 2017. PB in that one at nearly 54 shows how lazy I was as a young man 😀
Dave Troland (@davet24.bsky.social) reply parent
Good for you. I’ve been a regular runner for ~25 years. I like that it keeps me fit and love that it makes room for an extra biscuit/cake/whisky etc. BUT, I think I’ve only actually enjoyed running half a dozen times. The hardest bit is getting out the door. After that I focus on the earned treat.
Dave Troland (@davet24.bsky.social) reply parent
He’s worse than Trump. Trump is barely sentient. Vance on the other hand public stated that “Trump is America’s Hitler” and then decided to support him anyway. Trump is deluded, Vance chose to work with someone he thinks is fascist.
Dave Troland (@davet24.bsky.social) reply parent
Well done you. I hope you also enjoyed it.
Dave Troland (@davet24.bsky.social) reply parent
I was just thinking that myself.
Dave Troland (@davet24.bsky.social) reply parent
Good.
Dave Troland (@davet24.bsky.social) reply parent
I’m on the other side of the Atlantic with limited opportunity to have much of an impact in my support of this but I sincerely hope it gets enough support from decent US citizens, like yourself, to send a clear message. I know, from personal experience there a plenty of wonderful US citizens.
Dave Troland (@davet24.bsky.social) reply parent
Cheers 🥂
Dave Troland (@davet24.bsky.social) reply parent
Utterly contemptible. Very difficult to put any trust in them over anything never mind something as important as national security.
Dave Troland (@davet24.bsky.social) reply parent
Bloody hell!!!
Dave Troland (@davet24.bsky.social) reply parent
I struggle to understand some people. They’ve got empty lives with too much time on their hands if they’re attacking you. Ridiculous. Keep up the good work Katy.
Dave Troland (@davet24.bsky.social) reply parent
Heal fast, heal well. May you keep supporting the NHS and hating Reform for a long time.
Dave Troland (@davet24.bsky.social) reply parent
That’s exactly what it needs.
Dave Troland (@davet24.bsky.social) reply parent
Republicans could have stopped him in 2020. They are culpable. They could still stop him but they’d require a backbone.
Dave Troland (@davet24.bsky.social) reply parent
I sincerely hope you are right.
Dave Troland (@davet24.bsky.social) reply parent
Unimpeachably excellent advice.
Dave Troland (@davet24.bsky.social) reply parent
I hope so. The truth is it is inherently dangerous to race on public roads but that is a huge part of the beauty of the sport. There seems to be a higher incidence of serious injury in recent years so maybe the higher speeds are a factor? If so then how to limit the speed without ruining the racing?
Dave Troland (@davet24.bsky.social) reply parent
Good piece, good analysis. Before retiring I had a role in maintaining Health and Safety on a power station. Every time i watch a bike race I am eternally grateful i never had to be responsible for H&S there. None of us want cycling neutered but we need to see some improvement in safety.
Dave Troland (@davet24.bsky.social) reply parent
I’d be surprised if his patriotism is as durable as plastic; otherwise fair analysis.
Dave Troland (@davet24.bsky.social) reply parent
It really is heartbreaking. Just when he seemed to be getting back to the rider we know he is we get this. A setback he neither needed nor deserved. I just hope it’s a simple break that heals fast and that the setback doesn’t get in his head. I’d love to see him back competing for the big wins.
Dave Troland (@davet24.bsky.social) reply parent
There is a bit of me that wishes I could disagree with some of what you say but I can’t. It’s true. Given it’s one of my favourite books, I wonder what it says about me? 😀
Dave Troland (@davet24.bsky.social) reply parent
That is really rather beautiful and a powerfully conveys that message. Thanks for sharing.
Dave Troland (@davet24.bsky.social) reply parent
It’s a pretty good description. Waits lyrics and Bradbury’s prose have both painted exquisite verbal pictures that have stuck in my head for decades. A real gift I think but I’d never put the two together till I read your post. Thanks.
Dave Troland (@davet24.bsky.social) reply parent
You make that sound like it’s a bad thing? I think maybe that’s why I like him.
Dave Troland (@davet24.bsky.social) reply parent
Definitely nasty all round
Dave Troland (@davet24.bsky.social) reply parent
How cool. I vividly remember going to see the Apollo 10 CM on display in Edinburgh when I was a kid. The Apollo programme was one of the things that inspired me to study science and led me to a 40 yr career in science/engineering. Men like your Dad inspired millions round the world.
Dave Troland (@davet24.bsky.social) reply parent
It’s been off my list since 2016, won’t be back on for a while.
Dave Troland (@davet24.bsky.social) reply parent
Oooh! That looks worth a watch.
Dave Troland (@davet24.bsky.social) reply parent
Accurate
Dave Troland (@davet24.bsky.social) reply parent
Excellent. So much easier to get around and infinitely more pleasant.
Dave Troland (@davet24.bsky.social) reply parent
Absolutely perfect analysis.
Dave Troland (@davet24.bsky.social) reply parent
It’s been the way she relentlessly tracks even the very best down in the last lap that’s caught my eye. I’d hate to be the one looking over my shoulder as she inexorably closed the gap.
Dave Troland (@davet24.bsky.social) reply parent
Keep up the good work Jess.
Dave Troland (@davet24.bsky.social) reply parent
Well done Jess.
Dave Troland (@davet24.bsky.social) reply parent
All three are absolutely shameful and should never be in positions of power in any organisation. Simply despicable from them. Keep calling them out and holding them to account.
Dave Troland (@davet24.bsky.social) reply parent
Definitely worth a try I’d say 😀
Dave Troland (@davet24.bsky.social) reply parent
Eloquently stated truth.
Dave Troland (@davet24.bsky.social) reply parent
Same and in those days, for me, getting heat into the house and warm water to shower, meant lighting the coal fire. Effective but far from instant.

Time I re-read some Bradbury. Loved his writing when I was younger. Probably 40+ years since I read any of his books but they’ve stayed with me as clear and fresh as anything I’ve read since.
Dave Troland (@davet24.bsky.social) reply parent
It is indeed sad news but brilliantly, as you’d expect from Janey, she’s still proudly annoying facists.
Dave Troland (@davet24.bsky.social) reply parent
The best reason, so far, to look forward to my next birthday (61). 😀
Dave Troland (@davet24.bsky.social) reply parent
Yes, you’ll be fine. Sounds like you’re pretty much on track with what a lot of training programmes recommend plus don’t underestimate the kick you’ll get from adrenaline on the day. It really pulls you along.
Dave Troland (@davet24.bsky.social) reply parent
Agreed. Bought it on vinyl back in the 80’s still sounds fresh and exquisite.
Dave Troland (@davet24.bsky.social) reply parent
Agreed. I never seen a version I didn’t like in some way. My personal favourite was a translation into Scots by Edwin Morgan ( a fabulous poet) at the Tramway in Glasgow. Wonderful to hear it in the language I grew up with (probably doesn’t play too well outside Scotland though).
Dave Troland (@davet24.bsky.social) reply parent
Me too. Sounds like there should be quite a few contenders in with a real chance if they play their cards right.
Dave Troland (@davet24.bsky.social) reply parent
Think I need to read some of these again, particularly Use of Weapons. Player of Games was always my favourite.
Dave Troland (@davet24.bsky.social) reply parent
I wish, with all my heart, that I thought this was a joke rather than a fact.
Dave Troland (@davet24.bsky.social) reply parent
She sounds like his perfect partner. Kismet.
Dave Troland (@davet24.bsky.social) reply parent
Sissy space X got me
Dave Troland (@davet24.bsky.social) reply parent
She’s quite something isn’t she. I’m really looking forward to seeing how she does. Win, lose or draw she’ll have bring some joy to proceedings. Take care.

Those are the best aliens.
Dave Troland (@davet24.bsky.social) reply parent
Oooow! That sounds good. Normally not keen on messing around with Martini - how can you improve on perfection - but that sounds perfect for a summer’s day.
Dave Troland (@davet24.bsky.social) reply parent
Well done you. I still can do it and so wish I could. Absolutely bonkers to keep reading something you don’t enjoy wish I could accept my own logic.
Dave Troland (@davet24.bsky.social) reply parent
That is fantastic.
Dave Troland (@davet24.bsky.social) reply parent
I heard him on The Rest Is Politics Leading podcast fairly recently. My recollection is that he seemed reasonably sensible. I certainly hope he succeeds in helping France live by its motto.
Dave Troland (@davet24.bsky.social) reply parent
Nice 😊
Dave Troland (@davet24.bsky.social) reply parent
That’s really quite funny. I think I’d have have kept it too.
Dave Troland (@davet24.bsky.social) reply parent
Same. In fact I generally find that I recognise “celebrities” because I’ve seen them on Celebrity Masterchef as I’ve certainly never seen the majority of them anywhere else. Guess I’m not fully in touch with popular culture these days.
Dave Troland (@davet24.bsky.social) reply parent
I would say yes some do. My impression is that Banks grew more fond of the society he created as his books evolved. Having said that reaction to books is quite personal so you might well have a different take.
Dave Troland (@davet24.bsky.social) reply parent
Horrible isn’t it. I got that every year at my annual medical. Better was 3 years ago when I had surgery to fix a broken collarbone. As the anaesthetist was attaching the ECH pads he took one look at my hirsute chest and promised he’d take them off before he brought me round. Very grateful. 🙏
Dave Troland (@davet24.bsky.social) reply parent
Have you read any of Iain M Banks ‘Culture’ novels? I think they are intelligent, Sci fi books with some interesting ideas. My favourite of his is probably Player of Games, with Consider Phlebas a close second, all good though. Can’t help promoting a fellow Scot.
Dave Troland (@davet24.bsky.social) reply parent
Nonsense. Mid life is the period between being young and being dead. Lean in to it and enjoy it to the full.
Dave Troland (@davet24.bsky.social) reply parent
Absolutely. I’ve always loved the Samuel Beckett quote from Wostward Ho. Ever tried, Ever failed, No matter. Try again, Fail again, Fail better.
Dave Troland (@davet24.bsky.social) reply parent
I’ll cross my fingers for you🤞
Dave Troland (@davet24.bsky.social) reply parent

Dave Troland (@davet24.bsky.social) reply parent
Nice. Below is the view across the beach from my home town
Dave Troland (@davet24.bsky.social) reply parent
I can’t possibly make that decision for you. I don’t know your circumstances but she’s gorgeous.
Dave Troland (@davet24.bsky.social) reply parent
I think I’m going to use that 😀
Dave Troland (@davet24.bsky.social) reply parent
Sorry to hear that. Lovely picture of a fine looking couple.
Dave Troland (@davet24.bsky.social) reply parent
I’m not entirely convinced this is the Labour plan but it is exactly what I’d be doing in this situation. In my view it sticks to all the manifesto promises including staying within fiscal rules if done competently. I hope you’re right.
Dave Troland (@davet24.bsky.social) reply parent
You are forgetting one crucial point. They voted to ban other people from smoking. They never thought that they themselves could be moderately inconvenienced. Tory = entitlement ( or at least they think they are).
Dave Troland (@davet24.bsky.social) reply parent
Absolutely. Your post brought back memories of when I decided to get in shape a few years ago. I wasn’t really prepared for the increased appetite- it seemed so unfair! The good thing is the fitter you get the more you can eat.
Dave Troland (@davet24.bsky.social) reply parent
Yes. A fundamental law of physics is that exercise makes you hungry.
Dave Troland (@davet24.bsky.social) reply parent
Brilliant. Enjoy it.
Dave Troland (@davet24.bsky.social) reply parent
I don’t believe that having good taste is generally considered a problem. Enjoy
