This is something I didn’t appreciate before I started covering immigration — a person’s legal status can change in an instant through what amounts to bureaucratic fiat.

It's not clear what overemphasis they are referring to could be. I've been to the Smithsonian museums, including the African American Museum pictured. The experience has never been dour.

I appreciate the insight! The association of the liberal label with a stultifying, painful status quo is quite bad. With Trump once again (but even moreso) a clear foil, hopefully a new synthesis can coalesce around a liberalism that can better support conditions for nourishing and flourishing.
