A lot of our politics used to operate through this kind of mutually assured destruction: Republicans wouldn’t do anything too extreme because Democrats would do it right back to them, and vice versa. That system doesn’t work anymore because Trump does not care about anyone other than himself.
Remember: the billionaire Republicans hate Trump almost as much as we do. They’ve been planning to divide up the US into an oligarchy for a long time, and Trump just came along at the right moment and was suitably deranged enough to go along with the plan. But it does not end when he goes.
