So the guy that ran on ending wars and cutting out fraud, waste, and abuse from the government now wants to rename the DoD to the Department of WAR. A focus on War and a lot of unnecessary spending to reprint documents and signs. Got it.

And if you're driving a matatu, it's apparently a legal mandate that you honk at every passing pedestrian to get their attention, on the off-chance they may want you to stop and give them a ride.

Cultural difference between Kenya and the US: Kenyans use their car horns immensely more often. Going to pass someone? Honk at them. Going through pedestrians? Honk. See a friend? Honk. Get cut off? Honk. Already passed someone? Honk. Open the gate? Honk. Driving by my apartment at 2am? Honk.

Disrupt Norms (@disruptnorms.com) reply parent

While I think Newsom would be better than another Trump-like figure, I get where you're coming from. You can't compromise on issues that are core to your being - especially when they impact your daily safety, survival, and right to exist. Also, Dems need to change their playbook and go new.

Though, given the low confidence many Kenyans, especially younger ones, have in their government, I suspect this is seen as just another power/moneygrab from the current regime and a concentrated PR campaign wouldn't have the impact it should.
Disrupt Norms (@disruptnorms.com) reply parent
2. Better PR. This has gotten around more like a rumor on the internet than the massive project it is. It deserved better news coverage and the UN + Kenya Government should have talked more about the benefits, tangible and otherwise, to the Kenyan people.
Disrupt Norms (@disruptnorms.com) reply parent
There are things that could have been done better. 1. Consider spreading the UN presence to other cities in Kenya, not just Nairobi. Eldoret, Nakuru, or even Kisumu could have used the infrastructure investment and maybe absorb the impact of extra people more easily than Nairobi.
Disrupt Norms (@disruptnorms.com) reply parent
Studies have widely shown that immigrants are a net positive to the economies and communities they relocate to. This doesn't mean there isn't turbulence and a needed adjustment period, but overall things should work out for the better.
Disrupt Norms (@disruptnorms.com) reply parent
3. Most of the new jobs will not go to Kenyans. They'll get lower-paying jobs, like janitorial or admin assistants, but the higher echelons will be transplants from elsewhere.
Disrupt Norms (@disruptnorms.com) reply parent
2. Colonizers! Kenya is - rightfully so - sensitive about their nascent freedom from colonial forces and many see the influx of UN personnel as a new form of colonization while Kenyans are still finding their own footing. They've only been independent since the 60s.
Disrupt Norms (@disruptnorms.com) reply parent
The article glosses over the concerns that the average Kenyan citizen has been expressing on Social Media. 1. Nairobi is already expensive and crowded. Bringing in a large contingent of foreigners will only drive up rent prices and push Kenyans out of their housing.
Disrupt Norms (@disruptnorms.com) reply parent
3. Symbolically, as the article points out, this puts Nairobi on par with Geneva and NYC, making it the first non-Western hub of such for the UN. It shows that Africa has a seat at the table and acknowledges the importance of Kenya as a leader in the African continent.
Disrupt Norms (@disruptnorms.com) reply parent
2. $300M+ investment is nothing to sneeze at to improve Nairobi infrastructure. On top of this, the salaries of UN employees moving to Nairobi will largely feed the local economy, bringing external money into Kenya to help boost the economy.
Disrupt Norms (@disruptnorms.com) reply parent
There is a lot of good that can come from this move. 1. The UN has been criticized as a notoriously Western organization. Moving more functions, especially something as globally impactful as UNICEF, to Kenya can signal a push towards giving the Global South a larger voice in the organization.
