it’s very telling how many of the people involved with AI research in the 20th century - most of whom seemed to have largely meant well - simply never seem to have thought about our current “ultra-rich sociopaths try to use AI tools to crush everyone else forever” scenario

It's common enough. Couple very rural counties in California that don't pay all that well, and thus can't attract a lot of applicants. Sadly, it also happens with known bad cops. Often on a downward trajectory from stringent to departments that are less so.
And there's no way of quickly turning this around; PPB got that bad over the course of decades, and it's going to take a gigantic amount of work and inspired leadership to get them out of that funk. I wish them the best of luck (while my city continues to poach their best officers).

I played beer league with a guy in the states who couldn’t get into two different police departments because he couldn’t pass the tests but he eventually made it onto a third less stringent smaller town department. It’s crazy but I’m sure it’s pretty common.
Here in Canada cops in bigger urban settings (Ottawa, Toronto etc.) actually need to have university degrees and over 1000 hours of volunteering before they'll get hired... the process of training/hiring in the US (for most police forces) is quite insane.
