The problem is it’s working. The US is slowly but steadily becoming a totalitarian state.
And it’s only just beginning. It’s going to get so so much worse.

They’re spending these 4 years putting the authoritarian superstructure in place, with tremendous success so far. Once it’s in place, they’ll no longer need a charismatic leader who can GOTV. They can just plug the next guy into Trump’s spot, and the machine will keep chugging along.

This is the most spot-on assessment I’ve read. No bullshit forced optimism or hopium. No illusory happy ending. Just the cold, hard reality of our situation: game over, we lost. Time to focus on how to live through entrenched fascism.
No my theory is that Trump is no longer relevant. The Party used him to seize control, and now they have it. The USSR survived the death of Lenin. The CCP survived the death of Mao. The DPRK survived the death Kim Il Sung. The MAGA regime could easily persist decades after the death of Trump.
I don’t think they care if SS recipients notice their payments being diverted. Not like they can do anything about it.
The third reich lasted 12 years and took a world war/double invasion to end. The USSR endured for 80 years. The CCP is coming up on 80 unbroken years of rule and is stronger than ever. Ditto for the Kims in the DPRK Human lives are measured in decades, not millennia.
The problem is 1/3 of the country actively wants this and another 1/3 dgaf/isn’t paying attention.
