Wild that Ted Cruz is such an uncultured doorknob that he thinks of Dominos when he's searching for a pizza place in Illinois.

HEP author Tim Shanahan recently sat down for an interview with the Science of Reading podcast and spoke about research and takeaways from his new book, LEVELED READING, LEVELED LIVES. Listen to this conversation here:

We're about to see how well that works on a mass scale🤷🏻‍♂️. And if it doesn't lead to disproportionate discipline against students of color/students with disabilities, I'll happily admit I was wrong about it, but I will still miss opportunities to teach appropriate tech use.

Attention podcast ad producers. I hate ads. I don't want to hear them. But I have to be honest. I SO VERY MUCH don't want to hear Malcolm Gladwell telling me about" AI agents & assistants automating workflows & streamlining data" that I would happily listen to 100 other ads if you just shut him up.

I get the appeal. I just worry about it being consistently applied, & lost opportunities to teach appropriate use. And what we know about zero tolerance policies for anything is they usually mean inconsistent discipline & OVER disciplining of the most marginalized students in a given school.

I absolutely agree that phones can present a huge distraction and that limiting access in schools is a good idea. Just stating that I think a total ban isn't a good idea, & also isn't really feasible without wasting a lot of resources enforcing it & lots of kids losing instructional time b/c of it.

Profile picture Dr. Michael T. Paff (he/him) (@drmpaff.bsky.social) reply parent

What we can't quantify now is how much instructional/admin time will be lost enforcing bans. Based on my experience in a lot of different schools w/ varying levels of allowing access to devices, the answer will be: a whole lot.

I don't agree abt phone bans (and it's possible to reduce distractions in some settings while teaching responsible use in others...also possible to restrict use entirely for some kids & allow limited use for others), but like I said, that ship has sailed, at least in NY....

I am very comfortable saying younger kids don't need phones. But teens? It's nuanced, and they have excellent uses.

I think the basically American tendency to just try to regulate/ban things that *might* get kids in trouble, that adults do/use all the time, as opposed to thinking thru how to gradually teach responsible/moderate use, is troubling. And kind of lazy.

ban in schools, either (but that ship has sailed). It's a nuanced issue & I'd rather invest in A) teaching teens healthy online habits/moderate use and B) investing in other things for them to do (ideally outside!) Too often we confuse symptom w/ cause.

Consider the way we treat people who want to get rid of age of consent laws. Do we publish op-eds proposing that view in major newspapers? Do we produce humanizing documentaries about how they came to that belief? No. We laugh in their faces and tell them to shut up if they bring it up.

The narrative that anti-vaxxers or QAnon weirdos will come back from the brink if we're nice enough to them isn't tenable morally and doesn't hold up empirically. Ostracizing people whose beliefs harm others is a critical aspect of a functioning marketplace of ideas.

I think this comes from a good place but I disagree. A common thread in deradicalization stories is stigma: Once people start losing friends and jobs they reconsider their beliefs. Obviously you should try to be nice to people but you also need to draw a line where you won’t engage anymore.

As a pediatrician, I am horrified that "we" would treat children who commit crimes as adults. Why not instead address root causes (e.g., trauma) & provide opportunities for positive change (e.g., education, skill development)? Kudos to Louisiana residents for rejecting this ballot measure #PedSky

This. And, honestly, if we had hanged a LOT more Confederates and never rehabilitated their veterans, we might have avoided a lot of this awfulness. Ending Reconstruction /neo-confederates-> Jim Crow/reaction to New Deal -> Southern Strategy, Reagan, and Bush. Just a tiny hop from there to MAGA.
