In all seriousness, a lot of STEM roles in the corp. world reward stripping down info and applications to produce X w/in externally set confines. Dudes (and it's usually dudes) think they're brilliant for making the machine go Brrr, but don't need to engage with whether Baaa is better.
Easy Eye (@easyeye.bsky.social) reply parent
Hey man. Some of us STEM people are humanities and creative kids who realized that stats or programming or physics or whatever paid better than our rockabilly klezmer groups. We need cash to fund our world myth book collections. But, yeah, we work with a lot of really dense "smart" people. A lot.

The Trumpist majority on SCOTUS, like Trump himself, is spending down a trust fund they did not create, apparently believing it refills automatically. But it doesn’t. The whole system depends on other key institutions treating their rulings as legitimate.

The United States is rapidly going fascist and is the most materially prosperous large nation in human history by a huge margin. If that’s not rich enough to prevent a fascist resurgence, there simply is no amount of wealth that will stave it off and the problem is social and political.

The city could authorize tons of block parties on the North and West Sides and people could just run out of gas or drive below the speed limit on the highways. Maybe there are some construction projects the state's been meaning to get to. I bet Oak Park and Evanston would go along.

There are jobs where the vast majority of workers are women, like teaching, child care, elder care, & certain classes of healthcare. So much care! Men dominate the trades and industries that pay a lot, relative to training & education, like oil fields, transportation & logistics, timber & fishing.

Disparities are even wider btwn predominantly male & female jobs, w/ fewer opportunities to make highish wages for less educated women. Also, there are different degrees of stepping away, eg, choosing lower paying jobs w/ more time flexibility, or losing opportunities, as moms do more often.

A sadistic satisfaction in devaluing human dignity and a complete disregard for social cooperation is what makes Steven Miller what he is. The target of his sociopathy is irrelevant. People like that need to be contained in a functioning society. We need people to strike fearlessly, though.

I was a child in the 80s. It was absolutely taboo. I remember well very special episodes of Family Ties and Different Strokes, where the teen girls were approached or kissed by grown men. Facts of Life, too I think. This differed from episodes of prepubescent abuse on DS and Webster. And PSAs.

But another thing to consider. When Eastern European Jews started immigrating to the US in numbers, the mostly German/Prussian/Austrian Jews who were here looked down on this shtetl trash. They used the K word to describe them, refused to let them into their Standard Clubs, and avoided interaction.

Also, there was kind of a slow burn to this. People jumped out of the gate after 10/7 saying absolutely dehumanizing things about Jewish people, denying blatant antisemitism. It was bad and if you said anything, you were called a mass murderer. American Jews weren't allowed to name their injuries.
Easy Eye (@easyeye.bsky.social) reply parent
American synagogues and institutions had to hire extra security because of threats, warnings and attacks on Jewish spaces. This is not an abstraction. So should Jewish institutions say, "that doesn't matter right now, we have to look past it to prioritize this." Probably? But I don't know.
Easy Eye (@easyeye.bsky.social) reply parent
A lot of the anti-Israel rhetoric that preceded 10/7 and right after was in defiance or denial of the real dangers and fears of the Jewish Diaspora. If you're an advocate for Jewish concerns, should you overlook Jewish concerns about anything from violence to casual antisemitic talk?
