The elections are in 2026, the new Congress comes in in January 2027; this is basic civics. But the election is not guaranteed, and election victory certainly is not. I don't think people are going to vote for a do-nothing party that just talks about its inability to do anything.
The Book of the Void (@eddyrobinson.bsky.social) reply parent
You are literally arguing 'MAGA is going to say mean things about us' while a dictatorship is coming into being in front of your eyes. It's kinda pathetic. It's choosing to be a loser. Why do you expect voters to punch the ticket for the party that won't take any risks?
The Book of the Void (@eddyrobinson.bsky.social) reply parent
It was not a waste of time, it just didn't succeed. Do you know many times the GOP has voted to overturn the ACA? over 50 times. Was it a waste of time? No, it has kept their base unified. What good is a Democratic party that is too scared to confront the GOP? What is it even for?
The Book of the Void (@eddyrobinson.bsky.social) reply parent
Oh, you're right. Just do nothing until January 2027. I'm sure people will turn in droves for the helplessness party.
The Book of the Void (@eddyrobinson.bsky.social) reply parent
They can introduce impeachment articles. Do they have enough votes, no. So what? They can stand on the steps of Congress and read them out. And then do it again a few weeks later, and again, and again, while calling on people to stand up against the administration. Or, as you suggest, do nothing.
The Book of the Void (@eddyrobinson.bsky.social) reply parent
In the last 4 days the Trump admin committed a war crime in the Caribbean, ignored the law passed by Congress and unilaterally renamed the DoD to the 'Department of War', and is threatening to make war on Chicago. And you're here with memes about about deficit spending and KPI.
The Book of the Void (@eddyrobinson.bsky.social) reply parent
Nobody cares about that policy wonk stuff. OF COURSE I think the Dems are better on policy, but that's not a good excuse for their completely limp opposition to an overt fascist takeover. If you are are trying to do normal politics in abnormal times, then you are doomed to failure.
The Book of the Void (@eddyrobinson.bsky.social) reply parent
The image was originally done for a Spectator magazine cover, so making them look like nazis was deliberate in that context. Then DHS just slapped their text on top to turn it into an advert. This is why I keep saying satire and irony are bad comms techniques for the left.
The Book of the Void (@eddyrobinson.bsky.social) reply parent
They absolutely are. Zero cacus-wide effort toward impeachment, zero effort to activate the public, same old 'send money pls' and meaningless happy talk. Congressional Dems (with a few honorable exceptions) are a joke.
The Book of the Void (@eddyrobinson.bsky.social) reply parent
I've heard all the explanations over many years and they're worthless. Yours is unlikely to be any better. Voters are not gonna come out for a do-nothing party. The Dems need to do things instead of just being 'not the GOP'. Right now they are just helping to accelerate the Republic's decline.
The Book of the Void (@eddyrobinson.bsky.social) reply parent
Let them. Democrats have spent well over a decade cowering from action because of 'but what if the GOP....'. There isn't gonna BE a Dem party at this rate, because voters do not gravitate to or stick with a party that consistently shrinks from conflict and makes excuses for inaction
The Book of the Void (@eddyrobinson.bsky.social) reply parent
At least the Democrats have finally decided to file articles of impeachment. Ha ha just kidding, they are just gonna milk it for donations while insisting that they're fighting, but invisibly
The Book of the Void (@eddyrobinson.bsky.social) reply parent
Who. Fucking. Cares. So what if they don't have the votes? Bring the impeachment articles anyway and do it on the public record. It's totally fine if they try and fail to impeach him on a monthly basis. Action inside Congress will drive action outside Congress. Inaction leads to paralysis.

Asking @replsimon.bsky.social yet again what (if anything) would be enough to get her to sign on to articles of impeachment POTUS is publicly stating his intention to commit treason, as defined by the Constitution, but most Congressional Dems are afraid to mention impeachment. Why??

The only complaint expressed by the writer is that the sex scenes don't look very realistic

I actually don't need to see the link cards Or rather, I don't need to see the posts. if 10 or 20 web pages are insanely popular because breaking news or cool or whatever, I need to see those and the # of people sharing. What they write is probably irrelevant

Your comedy bit is ass It's not informative or insightful, it's just noise getting in the way of an actual discussion
The Book of the Void (@eddyrobinson.bsky.social) reply parent
This guy wants to be a pastor more than he wants to be a politician. I absolutely do not want spiritual comfort from a public official whose job is to represent the public interest. Any time I hear a politician mention God it's become a tell for 'I don't intend to do any legislative work on this.'
The Book of the Void (@eddyrobinson.bsky.social) reply parent
Yes, but I'm talking to a my Dem Senator and asking him what the Democrats are doing about it in legislative terms. Is that OK with you Maureen?
The Book of the Void (@eddyrobinson.bsky.social) reply parent
How are you going to vote on the discharge petition? I don't need you to tell me how to feel about it, I do need to know what you're going to do about it.
The Book of the Void (@eddyrobinson.bsky.social) reply parent
Is there are any level of corruption so egregious that Democrats would say it's time for impeachment? Stop telling us how to feel, tell us what you as lawmakers are willing to do *even if you don't currently have the votes*.

I don't know what point you're trying to make. I'm replying to someone who's arguing that being any more vigorous would make Hakeem Jeffries just like Trump, and I doubt you think that.
The Book of the Void (@eddyrobinson.bsky.social) reply parent
Well someone needs to be announcing their primary challenge now
The Book of the Void (@eddyrobinson.bsky.social) reply parent
Courts just ruled tariffs and the deployment of the ntional guard to LA were blatantly illegal but Hakeem Jeffries is trying to make nice with the guy doing the illegal stuff instead of saying he needs to be removed from office

There is in fact some middle ground between being a fascist and a doormat
The Book of the Void (@eddyrobinson.bsky.social) reply parent
This would be a great time to say that wilful violation of the law is grounds for impeachment
The Book of the Void (@eddyrobinson.bsky.social) reply parent
So actual children or genuinely ignorant people asking clueless questions are going to be given clueless answers? That doesn't sound useful. To be frank, this sounds completely irony-poisoned.
The Book of the Void (@eddyrobinson.bsky.social) reply parent
Histrionic nonsense. Some people don't want to be reminded of things the same way others are. I'm a big fan of yours but this rant is way out of proportion.

The next step in this situation is for groups of activists to *pretend* to be writing chalk messages on the sidewalk, and get hassled by cops (on video) for the appearance of writing sidewalk graffiti Bonus points for wearing tricorn hats or 18th century style wigs
The Book of the Void (@eddyrobinson.bsky.social) reply parent
You're both right. People are activated about it, but on the other hand people only seem able to mount a national scale protest once every 3 months, which is ridiculous.

The Book of the Void (@eddyrobinson.bsky.social) reply parent
I think it's unrealistic to expect all that from a magazine article, that's what books are for.
The Book of the Void (@eddyrobinson.bsky.social) reply parent
What pundit came up with this drivel, and why do newspapers publish it? Most opinion columns are the literary equivalent of door-knocking solicitors and the overly-earnest idea-havers who haunt public transport
The Book of the Void (@eddyrobinson.bsky.social) reply parent
This 'finding' seems of little value. Nonvoters are both disengaged by definition, and (I suspect) more likely to know more nonvoters. Trump voters and Harris voters are antithetical rather than being independent cohorts. You'd probably get an opposite result if Harris had won in 2024.
The Book of the Void (@eddyrobinson.bsky.social) reply parent
I tried a few of these but then I got it to sweat a bit with requests to make Mark Rothko fun and interesting. This work surfaces a whimsical desire for liberation that haunts our contemporary imaginary while highlighting that escape from late stage capitalism involves acts of self-alienation

I was just trying to explain this to my rep, who thinks the effective way to push back on autocracy is to talk about SNAP and head start Deep down many Dem politicians just see the electorate as a collection of wallets with feelings and themselves as policy sales associates
The Book of the Void (@eddyrobinson.bsky.social) reply parent
This article states the problem in more depth than can fit in a skeet. Autocratic militarization is an existential problem, not a budgetary priorities issue. It's the kind of thing Declarations of Independence were written about. So why can't you mention impeachment? slate.com/news-and-pol...
The Book of the Void (@eddyrobinson.bsky.social) reply parent
It's pure opportunism. The same people will extol the virtues of tobacco by denouncing busybody bureaucrats who hate fun and milking cig commercial imagery from the 1990s for pre-9/11 nostalgia, while also spamming pictures of Obama smoking to annoy liberals
The Book of the Void (@eddyrobinson.bsky.social) reply parent
I don't buy this at all. Younger generations are drinking (and drugging) less due to a mix of health info, cost, and covid hangover. Conservative social entrepreneurs are just trying to hitch a ride on the trend and claim they're leading the charge, what Marxists call 'tailism'.
The Book of the Void (@eddyrobinson.bsky.social) reply parent
If they are dispatched to Oakland, would that be something that would cause you to take a position on impeachment? To be frank, I feel this indirectly normalizes fascism by treating it like any other policy disagreement. I've never heard of an autocrat being defeated by policy wonkage.

I'm basing my conclusion on the very end. I just think it's clumsily worded (possibly even machine generated).
The Book of the Void (@eddyrobinson.bsky.social) reply parent
OK, but who do you think is the target audience for his media stunt?
The Book of the Void (@eddyrobinson.bsky.social) reply parent
Somewhat, and I think its a lot more literary than the median MAGA media diet. Also, an American prosecutor LARPing as a fictional American detective seems a more economical explanation than LARPing as an English spymaster, regardless of collar orientation.
The Book of the Void (@eddyrobinson.bsky.social) reply parent
I don't think he or his target audience are that literary minded; consider this much simpler possibility
The Book of the Void (@eddyrobinson.bsky.social) reply parent
This is for people who watch Columbo, the show that told you whodunit upfront so you could have the satisfaction of knowing the right answer all along without the effort of having to think about it. And really, isn't that exactly what a certain demographic prefers and demands more of?
The Book of the Void (@eddyrobinson.bsky.social) reply parent

The Book of the Void (@eddyrobinson.bsky.social) reply parent
Because I'm asking you, to see if you get it. If they didn't care at all about law, they wouldn't go to the bother of doing legislative theater, and the Dems' quorum busting tactic wouldn't have worked. They cling to the trappings of legality, and that's a weak point that can be exploited.
The Book of the Void (@eddyrobinson.bsky.social) reply parent

Good thing that's not what I'm proposing. Only a small percentage of people in the army will be moved by legal appeals from outside. For the enlisted ranks, severance is a better option than getting court martialed.
The Book of the Void (@eddyrobinson.bsky.social) reply parent
Don't deflect, I didn't say anything about nonpartisan. I asked you why they are holding a special session of the legislature to do it.

The Book of the Void (@eddyrobinson.bsky.social) reply parent
No It has to be done a referendum in California because that's how we put our existing nonpartisan redistricting infrastructure in place about 18 years ago
The Book of the Void (@eddyrobinson.bsky.social) reply parent
Because by law in California district boundaries are managed by a mostly non-partisan independent commission.
The Book of the Void (@eddyrobinson.bsky.social) reply parent
They're both important. Officers (who are usually better educated) are far more likely to refuse an illegal order than lower ranks. For the latter, it's smarter to leave than to try their hand at legal analysis.

I'm willing to subsidize this for some of, ah, most elite people. It would be a terrible shame if their magnificence was lost to future generations, we should preserve them now as quickly as possible
The Book of the Void (@eddyrobinson.bsky.social) reply parent
Valid. I guess the best response to that is that as long as the courts are operating, lawyers need to keep showing up or one day they won't be.
The Book of the Void (@eddyrobinson.bsky.social) reply parent
They only got $7.2 million for it back in 1867, very bad deal, so unfair...it's time to Make Alaska Great Again Seriously, I am curious about how Alaska's 2 senators are going to handle this
The Book of the Void (@eddyrobinson.bsky.social) reply parent
I don't think anyone is arguing that it doesn't matter, but a lot of people are questioning whether its still in effect. Look at any previous or upcoming posts calling for mass protests/civil disobedience, and there's a reliable chorus of people saying 'this isn't the time'.
The Book of the Void (@eddyrobinson.bsky.social) reply parent
The difference is that you can be pretty sure no Democrat will announce they'll pardon him if elected President (which is why they keep losing)
The Book of the Void (@eddyrobinson.bsky.social) reply parent
(To be clear, I'm not accusing you of this; I'm just saying that's why many of us don't feel very invested in watching the legal process play out)
The Book of the Void (@eddyrobinson.bsky.social) reply parent
Because there are many people who talk down any real world protest with phrases like 'it's not the time, let things play out in the courts first'. They're more worried about the idea of disorder than they are about authoritarianism so they habitually reject taking the initiative on anything.
The Book of the Void (@eddyrobinson.bsky.social) reply parent
Because they're not expressing compliance. A lot of people that waiting for all the lawsuits to fail before it's deemed acceptable to push back in the streets is a losing strategy. I think they have a point because one thing Trump is historically great at is running out the clock.
The Book of the Void (@eddyrobinson.bsky.social) reply parent
I read the whole thread. I disagree with the idea that standing around waiting on the courts to possibly come back with a favorable ruling that will be possibly be implemented (without anyone to enforce it) is better than opposing the administration en masse, eg via protests or a general strike.
The Book of the Void (@eddyrobinson.bsky.social) reply parent
I'm 200% sure there's no truth to the rumors about pseudointellectual cosmic visionaries just being a front for taking drugs and grooming minors or barely legal college freshers. Another version of me always tell the truth.
