HOW CAN BLACK PEOPLE WRITE ABOUT FLOWERS AT A TIME LIKE THIS dear reader, with our heels digging into the good mud at a swamp's edge, you might tell me something about the dandelion head & how it is not a flower itself but a plant made up of many small flowers at its crown & lord knows I have been called by what I look like more than I have been called by what I actually am & I wish to return the favor for the purpose of this exercise. which, too, is an attempt at fashioning something pretty out of seeds refusing to make anything worthwhile of their burial. size me up & skip whatever semantics arrive to the tongue first. say: that boy he look like a hollowed-out grandfather clock. he look like a million-dollar god with a two-cent heaven. like all it takes is one kiss & before morning, you could scatter his whole mind across a field.

It’s #WorldEmbroideryDay ! I make #SciArt #embroidery of #anatomy and #symptomatology. After I got sick with #MECFS in 2015 I started stitching as a more restorative creative practice than my previous music and theatre work.

the wandering ghost (2024) An image of an old engraving of a vagus nerve embroidered on green cotton. The main nerve lines are in blue chain stitch in perlé cotton. The brain and some of the face is in the same thread in backstitch. Details in the face are in single strand floss. A bright red anatomical heart is in whipped back stitch. Around it a bright golden yellow halo in a vesica piscis shape is in single strand thread. Three sets of ribs are in bright green/yellow stem stitch. There are some tiny details in different colours along some of the nerves. Burgundy roiling with sparse tiny black French knots are in the gut area. The nerve endings in the diaphragm area are lengthened with one and two strand whipped back stitch. Lia’s initials are stitched in green thread in the bottom right. heart vortices (2016) An embroidery on bone coloured linen. There is a swirling pattern in a vague heart shape stitched in burgundy back stitch. Poetry around the heart is stitched in tan and reads: whorl of fingertips. Apex and infundibulum. Fibres sway downwards in vortices. Papillary heart. Wings wrapt. mitosis sampler: summer (2024) Two reproductive cells dividing embroidered on off-white linen. The edges of the dividing egg cells and the nucleus membranes are in bright acid green split stitch. A circle of dark green stem stitch is started for the cell membrane. The corona radiata is in sage green zig zag chain stitch. The nucleolus of each cell is in sage green bullion stitch. The polar bodies are stitched in purple single strand back stitch. The cytoplasm is in variegated dark to bright green thread in a mix of seed stitch and French knots. Lia’s initials are stitched in off white whipped back stitch on the lower right. woman in skull (2016) An embroidery on bone coloured linen of the inside of a human skull looking down from a cut open top done in thin black thread. The textures make it look like the Vesalius woodcut it is based on. In the bottom left corner of the skull there is the tiny silhouette of a woman done in bronze thread.

A Quebec fisherman who was fishing 15 kilometers north of the US border was essentially kidnapped by US Border Patrol, who capsized his boat and dragged him to an American prison cell. In any normal time this'd be quite the international incident, y'know? www.ctvnews.ca/montreal/art...

Lallemand said he borrowed his friend’s boat and was fishing near Venise-en-Québec, which is roughly 15 kilometres north of the U.S. border at the northern tip of Lake Champlain. He says he has been fishing for decades and is adamant that he was in Canadian waters when the Coast Guard showed up and told him to turn off his engine, to which he complied. The three officers told him he was in U.S. territory. “I said, ‘No, I’m very sorry, I’m in Canada.’ And I said I’m polite enough to talk to you guys but you cannot arrest me. ‘You can’t come across the border and pick me up’ but they did,” he recalled. Lallemand started his engine and said he wanted to talk with the officers by the shore, but the Coast Guard followed and tried to push him into the U.S., which is what caused him to go overboard. “They’re tying my boat to their boat. They’re not even taking care of me. The third time I went down, coming out with water in my mouth, spitting it out, I said throw me a buoy,” he said. Once on their vessel, he said he was aggressively put in handcuffs. “I never saw somebody so angry,” he said. He was then handed over to U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers, who fingerprinted him, put him in a jail cell with his clothes soaking wet, and gave him a “dirty” blanket.

A horrifying statement published today by the Editorial Committee of the Agence France-Presse (AFP) news agency. "Without immediate intervention, the last reporters in Gaza will die" Translation from French to English by @cnorristrent.bsky.social:

Without immediate intervention, the last reporters in Gaza will die July 21, 2025 AFP has been working with 1 writer, 3 photographers and 6 videographers, all freelance, in the Gaza Strip since its staff journalists left in 2024. Along with a few others, they are now the only ones left to report what is happening in the Gaza Strip. The international press has been banned from entering the territory for nearly two years. We refuse to watch them die. One of them, Bashar, has been working with AFP since 2010, first as a fixer, then freelance photographer, and since 2024, as lead photographer. On July 19th he managed to post a message on Facebook: “I no longer have the strength to work for the media. My body is thin and I can’t work anymore.” Bashar, 30, works & lives in the same conditions as all Gazans, moving from one refugee camp to another under Israeli bombings. For > a year he’s lived in utter destitution, working at extreme risk to his life. Hygiene is a major issue for him, with recurring bouts of severe intestinal illness. Since Feb, Bashar’s been living in the ruins of his home in Gaza City with his mother, 4 brothers & sisters and the family of one of his brothers. Their house is devoid of any furnishings, except a few cushions. On Sunday morning, he reported that one of his brothers had “fallen, due to hunger.” Even though these journalists receive a monthly salary from AFP, it’s no longer enough to buy food, or they have to pay completely exorbitant prices. The banking system has collapsed, and those who exchange money via online bank accounts charge a commission of up to 40%. AFP no longer has the ability to provide them with a vehicle and there is not enough fuel to allow these journalists to travel for their reporting. Driving a car means becoming a target for Israeli airstrikes. AFP reporters therefore travel on foot or by donkey cart. (alt txt continued in next post)

A reminder that Facebook blocks all news in Canada which interferes with emergency messaging and vital news about weather, local fires, outbreaks etc because most of our governments are afraid to use wireless emergency alerts.
