(I know the references, but) a friend & I when passing some streets here in Detroit called Balmoral and Strathcona, would sometimes say, "You better put some balmoral on that strathcona!"
I can't decide whether that would make GPS incredibly essential or utterly useless.
In a weirdly similar vein, there's a neighborhood about 30 minutes north-ish of Detroit with white-flight nostalgia street names, like "Navin Field" and such. (Navin Field was where Briggs Stadium was built, which then became Tiger Stadium, now demolished.)
You have to pronounce the dot, too.

The one ever-so-slight positive is that anyone still supporting MAGA can't claim their idea of "great again" is anything but racism and controlling others' bodies, because that's about all MAGA has accomplished.

I don't know much about this building, but I always love seeing the Obama mural on it. Also, given its location & the fact it was a department store (Federal's) built in 1949, I can be nearly certain my grandmother probably spent some time in there.
I hope the building on the other side of the sky bridge will be preserved. Also, it wouild be cool if somehow that Obama mural could be saved. It certainly makes me smile whenever I drive by!

Detroit & its edge suburbs is populous enough still to make a difference in which way the state goes - along with Ann Arbor too, of course.
& would want to see it "taken back." Sadly, I think a lot of what gave Michigan to Trump this time was the people refusing to vote for Harris because of Gaza, for some reason. I remember one guy interviewed saying, "I hope she wins, but I can't vote for her."
I suspect his base even in the suburbs would be pleased to see Detroit attacked. Nowadays, you have to go out further into the suburbs to get to the hardcore right-wingers, but there are still plenty of white people who think Black leadership in Detroit ruined the city they're so nostalgic about

That does sound fun! I don't write fiction, but I'm a poet. I don't write much formal poetry, but I really enjoyed doing the pantoum I wrote b/c it has 16 lines, but they're really only 8 lines repeated in a certain pattern. So it was all about setting a few in place and then sorting out the pattern

Poverty and homelessness have already been criminalized for quite a long time in this country. Even in "liberal" places, like San Francisco (where voters passed a sit/lie law while I was out there for grad school). And the Market is God in the US; it decides who gets to live & who dies.

After talking to my doctor about weight loss options, the weather and my brain are doing a lot already to help, in terms of killing my appetite. The heat makes me not want to eat, and so does my brain telling me there are bugs in everything. (This even found its way into my dreams last night.)
I'm ace, so I have to do both. I make the spreadsheet and then never look at it.
They're always going on about how teenagers are supposed to be working certain jobs, so they shouldn't have a living wage. But teens are already only working part-time. If someone is working full-time, they should have a living wage.

Every Single Elected Democrat Should Be Talking About Texas Right Now Trump understands the importance of the Texas gerrymandering battle. So do Texas Democrats and a few blue-state governors. But where are the national Democrats?
Simply put.
This is the real trouble. In theory, you could have a perfect system running smoothly & all it takes is one guy thinking he's a genius for breaking rules while all the other schmucks are paying attention to the common good, and it can all come crashing down. Esp. if we start admiring such "genius."
Texas isn't a distraction. It's part of the strategy. That kind of gerrymandering both disenfranchises voters in the immediate future and, in the long run, leads to greater polarization & radicalization and almost zero representation.
(I hope I'm making sense.)
Keeping us all working, working, working is a great way the system keeps us focused on our own immediate needs. Of course, those of us who are working need to do our part to not fall into that trap; we just tend to be tapped out RE: time & energy. I need to work on that focus, personally.
I say that not to complain (although I'm always up for that) but to point out that people who can retire probably would do well to use some of that time & whatever other resources for the greater good.
As a GenXer, I was raised to believe I could get a job that was also a career, work at it through life, and retire. It became obvious that wasn't true before I was out of college, or even high school, but we weren't prepared to handle it. I've never expected to be able to retire, anyway.
...and I can't remember what I wanted it for. Yeah, probably to staple something, I know.
In another of the daily "Oh yeah, I guess I do have ADHD" moments since my diagnosis earlier this year...Tonight I was looking EVERYWHERE for my stapler & finally gave up. (It's neon green, btw.) Hours later, I noticed it was literally right next to my mouse the whole time. Maybe 3" from my hand...

Why am I up at 5:30? The guy across the street just did his nightly rap-along where he shouts at the top of his lungs. He's now playing the song audibly; when I first heard him doing this, he might've had headphones, b/c he'd just be yelling "B**CH!" over and over & I'd be like, "Hope it's not me?"
