I didn't day it wasn't normal. Lots of normal things are exploitative. In the 1960s, PhDs took 4ish years. Now they take more than 5. Doing the work doesn't take longer now than it did then. Schools just realized they can keep professorship-ready grad students around for pennies on the dollar.
Fava Bean (@fava.bsky.social) reply parent
I'm a scientist. Grad student lab labor costs a lot less than entry tier lab workers make in industry. It costs less than research assistants with BS degrees in the same lab make. I can't speak too much about humanities PhDs (although it still shouldn't take so long), but scientists are abused.
Fava Bean (@fava.bsky.social) reply parent
I'm a chemist. I know what a frickin PhD is. I also know that all of my professors got their PhDs in 4 years and now require their grad servants to work for 6-8 years because they have no incentive to graduate people who are ready to move on.
Fava Bean (@fava.bsky.social) reply parent
Is it normal because you need what you learn in years 5-7 or is it normal because unis don't want to lose super cheap grad students at the point they do prof-level work? PhDs didnt used to take 7 yrs. And research is faster now without the need to dig through physical stacks of books and journals.
Fava Bean (@fava.bsky.social) reply parent
Students should be able to stay as long as they are enrolled. That said, PhDs shouldn't be expected to take 5-8 years, either. Schools have been abusing their cheap (or paying!) indentured servants for too long. Graduate people faster. They do plenty of work to evaluate in 3-4 years.
