NPR published a timeline of actions taken by news and local officials. It appears that local officials lacked any sense of urgency, as they only posted warnings and info on X and FB. No phone alerts, no helicopters or door to door. Reckless.
I agree with several other posters that officials on the ground lacked a certain sense of urgency. Relying on posts on FB &/or X to alert people of imminent danger is just plain reckless. Heli otters, door to door, phone alerts...they could have done so much more.
