Cathy Moore refused to put any renters' commission appointments on the agenda for her entire time as head of the housing committee—18 months—while also moving forward with other commission appointments. Moore reportedly wanted to create a joint landlord-renter group of some kind.
Today's committee meeting was supposed to include the appointments or reappointments of 14 of the 15 members of the Seattle Renters' Commission. Nominees for these and a few other positions showed up at city hall, taking time out of their days, to be present for their long-awaited appointments.
The city's housing committee, headed by Mark Solomon (and previously Cathy Moore), was unable to meet officially today because committee members Sara Nelson and Rob Saka won't go to the meeting, denying the committee a quorum. Saka is currently sitting in his office.

Rob Saka has proposed amendments to make it clear that RESIDENTIAL properties can be sanctioned as nuisances under the expanded law, and to increase the daily fines by 50 percent. Kettle supports increasing the fine to "get the attention" of property owners, who may be from out of town or "foreign."
Unsurprisingly, the bill calling to fine taggers $1,500 for each individual "graffiti tag" passes unanimously. Next up: A bill empowering police to shut down businesses (i.e. bars and clubs) based on nuisance activities that happen near, but not on, their properties.
Sara Nelson says she hopes this bill will deter people from tagging in Seattle in the future, and says she hears more complaints about graffiti from constituents across the city than about ANY OTHER ISSUE. "We do make a distinction between art and graffiti," she says.
The council (particularly Saka and Kettle) has repeatedly expressed the view that graffiti taggers are typically well-heeled men in their 30s and up who are going out tagging after working their middle-class 9 to 5 jobs, which is why, according to them, the higher fines are appropriate.
Writing about this later, but the city council is currently voting on the bill to fine people for graffiti. They're upping the fine per tag to $1,500 on the grounds that, as Rob Saka puts it, taggers are "well-heeled." Bob Kettle piles on, adding that taggers have well-paying "careers."

both chambers to override any veto power. Then there are the courts, but unfortunately the court has limited ways of enforcing its rulings outside the cooperation of the executive branch.
The only real mechanism we have is the midterm elections -- in theory if the house were flipped and many of the Republicans ousted, then the legislature could reign him in. But the Senate is structurally biased for the GOP, and you'd need to be able to to get a consistent 2/3 vote against him in
