Star Wars was a big deal for a lot of reasons that no longer really apply. Sci-Fi was not a popular art form before the 80's and there was a lot of stigma that SF wasn't "serious" art. VFX was in its infancy still. Star Wars is the big bang moment that gave us nerd culture as we know it today.
