All over social media, I see his views have been simplified to the point of caricature. It does no one any favors when that happens. It's how we got Trump--because social media said Kamala was "pro-police" and "genocidal" and Hilary was, basically, Satan. It's pathetic and juvenile.

A little more nuance is necessary. Newsom has signed bills that established California as a "sanctuary state" for trans youth seeking gender-affirming care and prevented schools from requiring staff to notify parents about a child's gender identity. & He pledged billions of dollars for the homeless

Well, you could also trust the account of Moses Farrow, who corroborates what Soon-Yi says. It would be interesting if the two accounts you don't trust come from the two POC. mosesfarrow.blogspot.com/2018/05/a-so...
glenberger.bsky.social (@glenberger.bsky.social) reply parent
Important for accuracy in our statements--we'd want the same of us. He didn't help "raise" Soon-Yi--he never even lived in same house. He didn't have "children"--he had one child. Mia was Soon-Yi's adopted mother. This isn't to defend him--but inaccuracy weakens standing of his condemners.

Why do we even give their disingenuousness a second of indulgence? The only "sign" we need is the answer to this question: Are conservatives just as fine with a Democratic president invoking the unitary executive? Of course not. So it's not a "theory", it's something I like to call "bullshit."
glenberger.bsky.social (@glenberger.bsky.social) reply parent
Well, the nice thing about an ambitious weathervanes is that they'll do good things if they also think it'll make them more popular. Taking it to Trump? He's on it. My prediction is that he'll eventually come out strong for trans rights, and highlight the billions he proposed for homelessness.
glenberger.bsky.social (@glenberger.bsky.social) reply parent
Yeah but you called him "an empty shell." There are plenty of empty shells in politics. But the guy who immediately stepped up to get a resolution to redistrict California to fight Texas' redistricting? That's no empty shell--that's going on offense--the first substantive action in this battle.

Exactly! "Critical theory"?! The only ones talking ad nauseum about CRT are Republicans trying to score points.

no. he didn't. axios reported that an "anonymous" dem said that, but they printed Hakeem's photo for the article, as a weasel way of associating Hakeem with the quote. Hakeem actually called strongly for the files to be released.
glenberger.bsky.social (@glenberger.bsky.social) reply parent
I wonder whether folks sometimes just find it easier to rewrite history, suppress, etc then actually doing the harder healthier work figuring how to readjust a relationship. At some point "I'll love you forever" was uttered sincerely. That isn't meaningless. Ghosting can be legit cope, or a cop-out.

Interested in topic, so curious--what if shoe's on other foot? i.e., what if they're "done" with you, but your heart is still full? Do you "turn off" the love? Do you hope going cold turkey will do the trick? Do you ever hope perhaps the relationship could transmute to something platonic/healthy?

It's not even a belief system. It's just the fact that we are required as citizens to vote. So we should make the best choice we can based on what we're imagining each of the possible futures will be. It's childish to say "I don't wanna."
glenberger.bsky.social (@glenberger.bsky.social) reply parent
I hear that. I guess I do think it's a different standard--because the minimum we are asked to do as citizens is Vote. glenberger.bsky.social (@glenberger.bsky.social) reply parent
Yeah, I mean, look--I get it, I totally do--I've been gutted about Palestine for the last year--hell, for the last two decades. I don't think non-voters are in any way bad people. I just disagree with the strategy. I think it was counter-productive.
glenberger.bsky.social (@glenberger.bsky.social) reply parent
That logic--it just doesn't follow. When you don't vote, you're literally exercising as much power as a dead person. SOMEONE is going to be elected, whether you vote or not. Pretending your non-vote is somehow preventing the most horrifying things...that's just not how it works.
glenberger.bsky.social (@glenberger.bsky.social) reply parent
Except voting requires each of us to deal with probabilities. Voting isn't about the past, it's about the future. Which candidate is going to make things worse for the world? You weigh what you know, and then you choose the other candidate. That's the only germane morality at the ballot box.
glenberger.bsky.social (@glenberger.bsky.social) reply parent
okay. but "lesser of two evils" doesn't mean the choice is practically the same. It almost never is. All I'll say is--As much as we'd like to, in chess we can't capture the king on the first move. You make a series of boring moves, compromises, until you're in the best position to kill the king.
glenberger.bsky.social (@glenberger.bsky.social) reply parent
I understand you're not being glib. Yes, of course I would vote for the one who nukes three. Because opting out honestly means you're helping the one who nukes five. Why wouldn't you try to save 200,000 lives?? Opting out isn't the same thing as a clean conscience, it's just giving up.
glenberger.bsky.social (@glenberger.bsky.social) reply parent
Well...yeah. The stand the 2024 non-voter took was "Harris and Trump are equal in my eyes. The only issue that matters is Gaza, and I couldn't care less who the President is concerning that issue." That's the stand. And I--sickened and horrified by Israel's actions--think that stand is dumb.
glenberger.bsky.social (@glenberger.bsky.social) reply parent
Nope. I saw plenty of people on social media actively working to depress Democratic turnout because of their anger re Gaza. Surely you can see how that might have helped Trump into office, right? And yes--everyone who abstains from voting is also responsible--they don't get to pretend they're not.
