There's a increasingly wide gulf between what you might call "local abundance"—which largely consists of liberal and progressive activists and local electeds trying to do YIMBY-type things—and "DC abundance," which hosts conferences where Oren Cass is a speaker for some reason.

California is key. Its nation-sized population provides the large risk pool necessary to make a three-state public option pencil out.

Just imagine if the Alliance were to, say, contract with Kaiser to provide an affordable three-state public option?
Goldy (@goldyha.bsky.social) reply parent
Yup. They're still working on the pharmacy side of the equation. But pharmacists are licensed by the states, so my hope is that this is coming.

To fully appreciate the potential of the West Coast Health Alliance you need to appreciate the size of its combined economy. CA alone would be the fourth largest economy in the world. The Alliance together would be third, after only the US and China. Big enough to provide single-payer healthcare.

The news I was waiting to hear: "By late Wednesday afternoon, however, several Washington insurance companies — including Premera Blue Cross, Kaiser Permanente and Regence BlueShield — had affirmed their commitment to covering updated COVID vaccines for all patients, regardless of federal changes."

It’s not a “perk.” It’s a basic feature of how Prime worked. I canceled Prime last year after Bezos stripped the WA Post of editorial independence, but I’d only kept it that long because I shared it with my daughter. This makes Prime twice as expensive or half as useful. Bad value proposition.

Pritzker should mobilize the Illinois National Guard to oppose them. Extreme? Maybe. But I don’t see why he should just let another state effectively invade his.

This is an encouraging start to the new federalism. But unless and until CA, WA, & OR require pharmacies to administer the COVID vaccine and insurance companies to cover the cost, this is just symbolic.

For example, let's say you are a server in Alabama where BLS says the average wage including tips is $10.75/hour. If you earn the average, that means you're averaging $8.62/hour in tips, $5.12 of which subsidizes your employer in the form of the tip credit, and only $3.50 goes to you.
Goldy (@goldyha.bsky.social) reply parent
Also, the first $5.12/hour of those tips go directly to the employer, not the employee. The server is guaranteed a minimum of $7.25/hour including tips. For many servers outside of big cities, their employer gets a bigger share of the tips than they do.

There is long established legal precedent that read Art. I, Sec. 10 to permit most interstate compacts without congressional approval. But regardless, the Constitution is broken and unenforceable. If it doesn't apply to the president it doesn't apply to the states. This is about exercising power.

The whole point of sanctions is to create hardship for civilians, not because they deserve it, but in order to incite them to bring popular pressure on their government. That’s how sanctions work. And they’re less reprehensible than invading cities.
Goldy (@goldyha.bsky.social)
Blue states should sign an interstate compact imposing economic sanctions on states that send their national guard, uninvited, into any of the compact member states. Refuse to do business with states that violate other states’ sovereignty.

The difference is, City Light's investments are far longer term than the typical homeowner, opening up a lot of creative financing options. For example, City Light might pay for the install and own the panels, and the homeowner might get discounted rates in return.
Goldy (@goldyha.bsky.social) reply parent
Sure, we need multi-megawatt projects too. But if the rate of return on rooftop solar is higher than the cost of money then it’s kinda free. And City Light could scale this up far more efficiently than individual homeowners.
Goldy (@goldyha.bsky.social) reply parent
Ordinary folks don’t take out 8-, 9-, or 10-figure loans. But yes, large loans collateralized by unrealized gains can and should be taxed as income.
Goldy (@goldyha.bsky.social)
We don't need a difficult to administer unrealized capital gains tax. Billionaires like Cuban fund their lavish lifestyle by borrowing against unrealized gains at low rates. It's a tax dodge. So we simply need to tax the proceeds of these loans as regular income. Problem solved.
