my bandmate is an artist and tattooer and i would say he spends — conservatively — at least nine hours a day, nearly every day, sketching, painting, or tattooing — or thinking about sketching or painting or tattooing
i know musicians who can pick something up and run with it almost immediately, but they are all a) incredibly talented, and b) eat, think and sleep music in a way that even most musicians don’t
people often relate to art as if it springs from someone’s mind fully formed, and while that can happen, it’s almost always the result of a lifetime’s work of practicing and training and thinking about it
i would say, conservatively, we probably play a song at least 200 times before anyone ever hears it, and often times more than that
i know a few professional, working artists, and, like, it’s an extreme discipline, it is an *enormous* amount of work for very little payoff, but that’s part of what makes the payoff rewarding for both the artist and the audience
also think that people who don’t create art really undervalue how much process goes into it, for most artists, most of the time

the main thing is that i don't automatically rule out the possibility that someone could create meaningful works of art using an LLM, but i think it's even *less* likely than someone creating meaningful works of music after playing guitar for a year
i think this is an unfair parody of both sides of this, even if i agree with the general sentiment that technology does not automatically rule something out of consideration for being art.
i mean, i don't think i go *that* far, i can acknowledge that there are hypothetical ways you could create art with these tools, and make a defensible case for it, i just think the overwhelming majority of people aren't doing that
