Personal failing: I've never quite overcome my conditioned aversion to the Roland TR-series drum machine pattern praxis enough to seriously consider voting for Soul II Soul here. If I'm randomly putting on a Cure record...oops not enough space left to justify vote for Disintegration.

Although it's kinda clumpy and undifferentiated, the Mekons catalog is remarkably consistent from Fear and Whiskey (1985) through I Love Mekons (1993), a period during which they plowed through a whole bunch of material. There's a lot there that should be nominated in its respective year.

...And, of course, almost immediately the "rebel without a clue" line from "I'll Be You" turns up as a key line in Petty's "Into the Great Wide Open"🤔
Matt P. (@guatshakes.bsky.social) reply parent
I was tempted to stick with the long-standing critical consensus here and vote Mekons, but ultimately didn't...although Chris Lord-Alge's mix on the original release does it no favors, DTaS has 3 of Paul Westerberg's--one of the best songwriters of his generation--best actual songs on it.

Sad to hear of Graham Greene's passing... Such a wonderful actor and a very nice man I got to meet him on a few occasions as we both lived here in Stratford and even got to sing for him once at his "Walk Of Fame" ceremony. Huge loss RS
Matt P. (@guatshakes.bsky.social) reply parent
Like both, and I suspect the Vaselines will benefit from scarcity in this vote. However...as much as Jeff Lynne's production hasn't aged well for me, FMF has a few of Petty's best songs (in a very deep catalog). The V's best songs had already come & gone on the two EPs that preceded Dum-Dum.

Mind's mostly made up on these. Full Moon Fever is a Petty solo 💿 that should have been a Heartbreakers 💿. Don't Tell a Soul is a Replacements record that should have been a Westerberg solo record. The XTC vs the Cult matchup is maybe the two most mannered bands in the tournament head-to-head😝.

Batman is fine work-for-hire (completely with plenty of Jack Nicholson product placement). "Batdance" and "The Future" sound good, if inconsequential. Most of the rest of the album somehow manages to sound both impersonal AND uncommercial.
Matt P. (@guatshakes.bsky.social) reply parent
Voted Heart Shaped World. Mostly because I dig James Calvin Wilsey (going all the way back to his time in the influential early San Francisco punk band the Avengers) enough to (mostly) overlook the arch sulkiness of Isaak. So much for no second acts.

Doesn't matter if it's Jae Lee, Miller, Daniel Warren Johnson, Sienkiewicz, Jeffrey Alan Love, or Nick himself.

Here's Marvel's August 1948 output. I was mistaken about how many girl books launched -- the only other first issue is LANA -- but it's astounding how much of line here either has female leads or is otherwise showcasing girl characters. The rest of the industry isn't doing anywhere near this much.

This isn't incorrect ("classic rock" was an early '80s invention of radio programmers). But, strictly applied, it forces one to take awkward positions--like AC/DC's "Highway to Hell" (1979) is classic rock, but AC/DC's "You Shook Me All Night Long" isn't--that are tough to do anything useful with.

Corrupting economic statistics will change our economic reality. Here's how: Tariffs raise prices. Social Security is indexed to inflation. If Trump tells a partisan BLS head to downplay inflation, seniors' social security checks won't keep up. Rigged stats = stolen benefits.
