"The Woods" started life as a 2,000 word reddit post, then got rewritten into a 12,000 word novelette, then got rewritten again into a 46,000 word novel (still on the short side but much longer than 2k words).

You see the same thing on weather radar sometimes, especially in rural areas. Look at Alaska. They use local radar for populated areas and GOES satellite imagery (I think) for everywhere else and it causes similar pockets.
