There’s an enormous amount of stuff in this book I’d like to highlight, but start with: “What emerges as the most elementary insight is that, since we do not now have any ways of making computers wise, we ought not now to give computers tasks that demand wisdom.”

What could be more obvious than the fact that, whatever intelligence a computer can muster, however it may be acquired, it must always and necessarily be absolutely alien to any and all authentic human concerns? The very asking of the question,

In the UK we had a school shooting in Dunblane in 1996. A primary school, 16 kids of 5/6 years old and their teacher, murdered. In 1997, Parliament made private gun ownership effectively illegal in the UK, with a handful of very specific exemptions. Zero school shootings since. Zero kids shot dead.

Why should I write better when a machine can do it for me? Because actually no one can do it for you, because your voice is unique among all the people on earth. Siri never petted a horse's neck. Alexa has never been ghosted by the captain of the football team. But you have lived, your heart is beating, you have suffered, and you have something important to say. It's a human's job, to use words, and whatever job you give to a machine, that part of your brain goes dark. Maybe it's worth it when it comes to remembering phone numbers and directions, but when that part of your brain that uses words goes dark, that's a vast area that's very close to your soul. Don't let some internet platform convince you that what you have to say and create isn't worthwhile. Words are the echo of your soul. Honing that echo matters.

I’d very happily watch mecha anime with a Cyberpunk type storyline. “Corps need to be reined in, or even smashed apart - and giant robots are the way to do it.” Of course, the irony involved in Bandai Namco funding an anti-capitalist mecha anime would probably create a black hole centred on Tokyo…

That’s my understanding, yeah. From what I’ve seen, the point Tsurumaki was making leaned more on the idea that the power fantasy in anime has moved away from mecha. The zeitgeist now is moving more to magic and the fantastical. Broadly, mecha is a shrinking genre, and even Gundam isn’t immune.

fundamentally the problem is that if you think "hotels are where I stay on holiday and I like being on holiday so living in a hotel must be fun and it's not fair others get to do it and not me" then you have the intellectual reasoning of a little child and it's going to be hard to engage with you

I like it! Rusty in Strike vs. 4 of the 5 dudes Mu was escorting up to Heliopolis, based on Archangel. The ways that timeline would diverge, and fast… that’d be a real GQuuuuuuX-ing of the Cosmic Era. One day I’ll finish my Destiny sidestory, now I’m thinking about SEED fics. One day!

Peturbator’s track ‘The New Black’ samples Network spectacularly, too. As shown in this video that syncs the monologue to the song!

I’m looking forward to GSeeeeeeD in about 2040, the reboot in which Rusty manages to steal Strike and we see an alternate CE 76 where ZAFT won the war. Athrun and Lacus in a ‘cold war’ over PLANT’s future, both desperately trying to figure out the Coordinator fertility issue to gain an advantage…

Fred Astaire should be an unlockable character in Tony Hawk

News of the pratfall leaked. “Fred Astaire, aged 77, has broken his wrist by falling from a skateboard,” announced The Associated Press in a world news bulletin. Three days later a spokesman for Golden Films, Astaire’s company, issued their own update. “It was a clean break but his wrist will be in a cast for six weeks. We wanted to have a picture taken with the cast but he is a little shy about the accident,” a spokesman told California local newspaper The Daily Review. Although he was embarrassed about the accident, Astaire noted drolly that some of his actor friends had cautioned him about the dangers of doing skateboarding tricks at such an advanced age. “Gene Kelly warned me not to be a damned fool, but I'd seen the things those kids got up to on television doing all sorts of tricks,” said Astaire. “What a routine I could have worked up for a film sequence if they had existed a few years ago. Anyway I was practicing in my driveway and fell off.”

Go read a book. Specifically read a fiction book. There’s so much good out there and it’s enriching and wonderful and it’s so easy to fall out of practice at it.

For comparison, Microsoft Office 365 has 345m paid subscribers worldwide. The idea that ChatGPT will conjure up five times that amount in just a few years isn't just hypothetical, it's fantasy. These people are delusional.

There’s an excellent CIA manual from WW2 on how to undermine one’s employer through excessive dedication to rules and regulations, ‘asking helpful questions,’ and so on. Not, of course, that those in uniformed services should give any attention to such a document produced by a federal agency, nope.

Nostalgia is a toxic impulse but also I miss the time when tech trends were things like "let's put everything in a translucent colored plastic case" instead of "let's add software to everything that lies and also accelerates climate change"

So in German, ‘criminal police’ makes sense. It’s the term for the plainclothes detective branch, as compared to the uniformed officers. (things I learned from Robert Harris’ excellent book Fatherland!) Presumably wherever this came from, it’s translated that same terminology somewhat literally.
