Person 23 (@hibernaculum.bsky.social) reply parent
As I understand the crime will be showing support for Palestine Action rather than planning any PA style activities, a protest against proscription. It's beginning to get slightly meta. Maybe protesting these arrests will result in arrest in a third hand sort of way? That really would be silly.

Griftity grift.
Person 23 (@hibernaculum.bsky.social) reply parent
I suppose it might depend on how that happened. If I wrote something that said I thought vandalising air force jets was justified in and that I would be supportive of such actions, would that be incitement in the same way as encouraging someone to throw a brick at a shop window? We need a lawyer.
Person 23 (@hibernaculum.bsky.social) reply parent
It's wiser to pay attention to the stages prior to that and take authoritarian overreach seriously. Waiting until it's too late? Not so wise.
Person 23 (@hibernaculum.bsky.social) reply parent
Is encouraging vandalism an offence?

The thing is that since 2014, when Scotland was told that independence would be a dangerous leap into the unknown, England has repeatedly forced us into one dangerous leap into the unknown after another, all of which were actively resisted by the hated Scottish nationalists.
Person 23 (@hibernaculum.bsky.social) reply parent
Perhaps the target for this isn't the right at all, it's the vast swathe of people between left and right - easily the majority - who may begin to internalise the idea that we need to leave the ECHR and repeal the 1998 Human Rights Act to deal with immigration.
Person 23 (@hibernaculum.bsky.social) reply parent
Hopefully England will have someone who's not a fascist to vote for.

Hmm. It's crossed my mind. Hopefully Scotland can leave before we're militarily forced to remain.
Person 23 (@hibernaculum.bsky.social) reply parent
Sure, but it's got very little to do with the ECHR or the Human Rights Act of 1998! I am sure that the politicians will find ways to conflate the two though, they all seem hell bent on dragging us out to one extent or another.

They're scared, and they've been made scared. Of course it's hard to process that fear or admit to it so it's rapidly converted into something they can externalise, which is anger. Either way it's not a great state to be making rational decisions in!

What if it's not phoney? What if we're leaving the ECHR soon, whether we like it or not? I can understand why the political class find this appealing. I'd take it more seriously.
Person 23 (@hibernaculum.bsky.social) reply parent
Remember that this gets government off the hook for those big, bothersome obligations they have to look after us. The politicians can then do what they are surely born to do, which is middle manage for corporate interests.
Person 23 (@hibernaculum.bsky.social) reply parent
But you have heard a chorus from the political class, almost unified, saying that the ECHR prevents them tackling illegal migration - whatever the hell that is - and it needs left or "modified". It's a stitch up.

See also the 1998 Human Rights act, also in the firing line. Labour, Tory and Reform are all after these protections, all using immigration as an excuse.

Leaving the EU leads to leaving the ECHR, repealing the 1998 Human Rights Act, the removal of basic rights gained last century. It's not just another talking point, it's a key goal. The motherlode. I think we need to see this as a serious, existential threat.

I don't, but the party is fundamentally compromised. The party systems of both the US and UK are irreparably broken, for the same reasons - they serve capital. I'm not saying that from some Socialist Worker perspective, it's just so much more apparent now than ever. It's a corporate world now.
