This is exactly it. I enjoy the Uma manga and anime but the game makes it very clear that, lacking the structure of a proper story, they're all one of any number of the same frictionless stock moe archetypes we've seen one thousand times in anime already.

We've only played once so I can't say for sure yet, but it seems quite replayable and also very easy to make variants for it (which in other games I'd object to, but in wargames it's quite traditional)
I understand this game was "solved" like 13 years ago and there's apparently some sort of unstoppable British strategy but I simply refuse to learn it
Tonight we played A Few Acres of Snow, a very tight deckbuilding wargame set in the French-British Seven Years' War. Absolutely loved it. The swelling deck representing the increasingly unmanageable logistics of a war waged at the end of a very long supply line is genius.

What this achieves is that when it's your turn, you contribute as much as you're comfortable with. If today you're not feeling very engaged, you can just do slice-of-lifes - and if you're really itching for drama and action, go ahead and frame major scenes. It just works.
Getting a read on the academy means asking a question that establishes a new fact once answered ("Who really holds power in the student council?"). Everyone contributes to the answer and whatever is decided becomes a new fact.
Narrating a Slice of Life is exactly what it sounds like - you describe your witch in her daily life, doing something funny, or cute, or interesting. Other players can chime in but this isn't a plot scene. It's a little vignette for when you have a cool idea you want to get out there.
Framing a Scene is the core of the gameplay - an interesting scene is proposed by the player, either a completely new plot hook or something following from what's already happened. It always starts in the middle of the action and the goal is to answer a question ("How do we win this competition?")
One constant piece of positive feedback I've gotten about Cantrip is how it organically accomodates all sorts of players - play proceeds in "turns", in which the activel player chooses whether to Frame A Scene, Get A Read On The Academy or Narrate a Slice of Life. More details downthread!
I really enjoyed the first episode! I like that unlike other hobby animes, there's a lot of very real friction between the girls from the get-go, instead of them being bubbly BFFs as is common. I'm looking forward to episode 2!

The character animation takes a nosedive in the last few episodes too, but it's still that rarest of anime: something adult and ABOUT adults, mature, dealing with complex themes (and pretty successfully) without falling into boring, tired anime tropes. It's da good shit.

People are saying "oh but if it had more episodes" and I get the thinking but it's also wrong: the pacing constraints due to the 12 episode format hurt it, but there simply aren't enough good ideas there to sustain a longer show either. It's a failure all throughout.
