I worked at a major Civil War battlefield for 7 years. Talking daily about death and destruction was psychologically damaging for me. Every NPS site has complex and fun history. It doesn't always have to revolve around killing. I will never work at a battlefield again, though I see their value.

Nobody deserves to get shot. But we all make choices that make getting shot more or less likely. If you carry a military grade weapon into a peaceful rally, you are inviting scrutiny and possible physical retribution. A better choice would have been for him to remain home if he were scared.
Obviously racism is a huge problem in this country. You would have to be blind and deaf and dumb to not know that. Guns do not solve that problem. They make it worse. They make everything worse.
