All remaining chores for today have been hearby canceled save for loading and unloading the dishwasher. The kids are building a Lego set and I’m going to read.

It’s based on a true story and I just bought the book for my Kindle.
Hubs and I watched the movie “The Penguin Lessons” on Netflix last night and it was fantastic. Highly recommend.
Kid #1 read 2-3 pages a day and writes sentences. I’m still working on basic phonics sounds, sounding out short words, and tracing letters with kid #2. I wish she could read 2-3 pages and write some sentences!
Hubs has to work today because some of the people he works with abroad are in and I’m salty about it. I was looking forward to a long family weekend.
It’s a great book! I let kid #2 flip through it and pick his section for the day so he stays interested, and he loves it. I’ll do the same with kid #2 when she is his age and reading well and writing.
I highly recommend this book for kids. Kid #2 reads 2-3 pages per day and writes a 5-7 sentence report about what he has learned. Today was the French Revolution.

Kid #1 was sick all last weekend with back-to-school germs and I thought kid #2 and I escaped it but now we’re both running fevers. Poor girl starts school Tuesday and she will have to miss if she’s still sick tomorrow. 😭

We are very fortunate with our subdivision, both because of the people and that we’ve been having a white flight of sorts as more and more Black and brown folks move in. There are two parallel communities in the subdivision and white families are regularly leaving.
It comes back tenfold.
Indirectly, all the wives of The Brown and Black Dads Guy Economy have started swapping help amongst each other as well. A network of Gals, if you will. I’m the crafting and handmade gifts Gal, aspiring to also be the homegrown fruit and veggies Gal.
Hubs is part of our neighborhood’s Brown and Black Dads Guy Economy, it’s fabulous. We have to keep the “I know a gal/guy” economy alive.

If you do get one of the indoor hydroponic systems like Aerogarden or LetPot you can buy aftermarket generic “grow anything” kits that let you use your own seeds so you don’t have to buy their expensive seed pods. That’s what I did.

They are going out of business so I got the Harvest Elite on sale like half off, and I scooped up a seed starting tray so I can start seeds indoors with the Aerogarden in the spring. Their products seem to last a long time. Another brand I was looking at was LetPot.
2 Romaine lettuce and 1 spinach are growing nicely in my little Aerogarden. Unfortunately my mint seed pod and 1 spinach pod did not germinate so I tossed those and started new pods with basil and an additional romaine. So far I like the Aerogarden. I wish a larger model had been on sale.

I have so much to do around this long weekend, but the family and I went on a 3 mile walk around a local reservoir park this morning and last night was methotrexate night so I am absolutely wiped. I need to repot and “clean” a handful of out of zone plants tomorrow come inside but not today.
I have to be able to keep up with the youngsters lol.

I do the best I can with YouTube, I just struggle replicating what I see. My best friend is limited on styling as well unfortunately but we’re both going to cast the net wider so to speak and hopefully find someone who can help. I’ll gladly pay good money for lessons.
Kid #2 has 3B/3C hair and mine is just wavy so I’m always trying to learn more things when it comes to her hair care. I have just massively struggled with braiding and trying to translate YouTube tutorials into a successful hairstyle. I’m hoping I can find in person styling lessons.

I have zero idea why they are having kids if they have no intention of properly supervising them. I mean do I always want to play? Nope. But do I always want to ensure safety and basic manners? YUP.
That makes it all the more worthwhile.
I can only imagine the level of parental inattention you saw. I use my phone at home if the kids are otherwise occupied, and I feel guilty about even that. I don’t get why some of these people even had kids.
Exactly, one time when we had to leave over the summer kid #1 asked why I don’t go talk to the unsafe kid’s parents, and I had to explain that the other parents actually might get mad at me or yell so it was better to just mind our business and go.

They don’t get hurt while their caregiver sits on 20 feet away with their head in the phone has been insane. But we regularly have to leave because of checked out parents letting their kids play in a way that’s unsafe to not only themselves but other kids.
We have had to leave many times before because of unsupervised kids not playing safely. It still blows my mind how parents of the really little kids think they can check out like this, especially in an indoor playground or other public space. The amount of times I have had to help kids so…
Just got home from the indoor playground with kid #2. She was easily the oldest one there and the amount of parents/caregivers completely stuck in their phones and not supervising their toddler age children or flat out ignoring their kids was terrible. Kids that age need extra supervision there.

Out to her braider/stylist to see if I could pay for some lessons to expand my ability beyond basic 3 strand braids and variations of pigtails/ponytails. I don’t want her stuck in the same couple styles due to my lack of ability. I’ve tried YouTube tutorials but I struggle learning that way.

I’m doing my best to learn more styles I can do w/her hair for school that keep her hair at least partially out or completely out of her face so she’s not getting paint or play doh or things in her hair and coming home a tangled mess. I to have a solid style repertoire for her for kinder next year.
I’ve been trying for a year to learn how to French braid so I can style kid #2’s very curly hair and I think I’ve finally got it. I did two French braid pigtails today and for the first time they look decent. But I need to find a good gel for her hair that I can use while braiding to control frizz.

I did purchase an Aerogarden Harvest with a seed starting tray so next year I can have a better chance of successfully starting seeds indoors and hardening off seedlings for the garden. I will still buy seedlings and starts at the nursery next spring for some things that I can’t start indoors.
