Thanks. It really was. Cancer was not on the radar bc her family didn’t have any history. It’s a long story (she had Parkinson’s disease, still lived independently and didn’t suffer from headaches) but the experience has helped me better understand when I should step back and assess vs. panicking.
Hosen (@hosentime.bsky.social) reply parent
Gotta get the right squish. 🤣
Hosen (@hosentime.bsky.social) reply parent
That would freak me out! I got a phone call & they used ambiguous terminology - I was still freaked out. But I think I’m less sensitive now. My mom recently passed away from a surprise brain cancer diagnosis - after a 7 week rollercoaster in hospital, I think I’d be less paranoid now by findings.
Hosen (@hosentime.bsky.social) reply parent
Sorry to hear that but good to know. I didn’t even know MRI was used for breasts but I guess that makes sense - why wouldn’t it be?? I only recently learned that sometimes, US is used (my mom had to get one done by US while in hospital bc of physical limitations). This thread has been instructive!
Hosen (@hosentime.bsky.social) reply parent
That’s interesting. I didn’t know that. I had my first one around 40, I think.
Hosen (@hosentime.bsky.social) reply parent
I’d like to also share: don’t be freaked out if they make you come back in for additional imaging on account of “dense breast tissue”. I was freaked out when I got the call but apparently it’s common.
Hosen (@hosentime.bsky.social) reply parent
Good to share. Honestly, I had no clue before I went. I think my second one was worse than my first one bc I was surprised by the discomfort. I think it probably depends on a bunch of things like breast size, machine, operator, fluid retention, pain tolerance, etc.
Hosen (@hosentime.bsky.social) reply parent
Please add to your bio so that nobody misses this special credential.
Hosen (@hosentime.bsky.social) reply parent
* That garbage.
Hosen (@hosentime.bsky.social) reply parent
Imagine Hillary having the flu?? I am still so angry over the garbage.
Hosen (@hosentime.bsky.social) reply parent
I think it was a rush coverup job. Makeup that is. Could refer to so many other things…. That said, remember the medical BS news that Hillz went through?? Among Biden, Trump and her, she’s running marathons around them.
Hosen (@hosentime.bsky.social) reply parent
This probably needs to be trumpeted on the other site. You know, for the “poorly educated”.
Hosen (@hosentime.bsky.social) reply parent
The cruelty is so needlessly sick sometimes.
Hosen (@hosentime.bsky.social) reply parent
Thank you for this piece. You explained what many of us are feeling. It’s not that Israel wasn’t wronged and had a right to defend itself. It’s that it became indiscriminate, cruel and indefensible. Which is confusing given its Holocaust roots. Goes to show the fallibility of the human condition.
Hosen (@hosentime.bsky.social) reply parent
I can’t get over the perfection of invoking this. It’s such a seminal movie line.
Hosen (@hosentime.bsky.social) reply parent
I have a problem with the kids too. I got on an elevator at a hospital with a 20-something woman and she was watching a show on speaker. I was gobsmacked. No possible reason that’s necessary. I find elderly ppl constantly talk on their phones in waiting rooms - annoying but I give them a pass.
Hosen (@hosentime.bsky.social) reply parent
My girl has scratched furniture. Has IBS and there was so much diarrhea for a long time. Had many health issues bc she was the runt. And yet I’m about to finally adopt her and make her a foster fail. No regrets. But do get a pair.
Hosen (@hosentime.bsky.social) reply parent
Deepest cut. Almost cruel not to share the OG clip together with any of his book covers.
Hosen (@hosentime.bsky.social) reply parent
Where did you live? It apparently started around 6pm Pacific Time. I checked bc I remembering getting off my evening shift from my high school job at a video store. It was in the Eastern time zone and it was late-ish; came home to my folks watching. Maybe you’re thinking of the verdict?
Hosen (@hosentime.bsky.social) reply parent
Sounds like the place of employment may involve some sensitivity. Maybe work related to children or healthcare. I am not a lawyer and abhor the idea of using intimate pictures to ruin someone’s reputation. But without more info, it’s hard to say for sure. I’m also not sure what a court would say.
Hosen (@hosentime.bsky.social) reply parent
Saw this the other day. Reminded me of the time as an 8 or 9 y/o I got dive-bombed by an angry mama robin bc my dad was showing me her nest in one of our fir trees. Thanks, dad! 🤣🤣 She was right and we were wrong!

Exactly. That’s also where my mind immediately went. And all the other less wealthy dopers.
Hosen (@hosentime.bsky.social) reply parent
Neither looks well executed to my eye. The tie on the left ends up too short. Someone noted the one on the right is off centre. Hard to tell on my phone. But if we’re comparing these 2 renditions alone on my phone, I will say the right looks better. More balanced in terms of white space vs tie.
Hosen (@hosentime.bsky.social) reply parent
I realize that this would only keep the lights on: How about a super efficient pay-what-you-can button? I like BlueSky as is without all the ads and bloat of Xitter.
Hosen (@hosentime.bsky.social) reply parent
I’m tired of that fussy nonsense. Ppl have forgotten about all carcinogens with the smoke. My tip: be sure to always preheat your grill to the cooking temp before throwing anything on. Keep your grills clean by scraping after while still warm. And use a cover to extend the life of your BBQ. Enjoy!
Hosen (@hosentime.bsky.social)
I suspect that whoever creates the @nytimes.com Connections puzzles skews young and male. Today‘s puzzle included parts of the ear which I suspect kids today are more familiar with bc of evolving piercings. And previous puzzles have had a lot of newer superhero characters and gaming references.
Hosen (@hosentime.bsky.social) reply parent
Exactly! I’m in North America where manual car models keep being put out to pasture but my car is manual. Hopefully, there will be a resurgence when I’m looking again.
Hosen (@hosentime.bsky.social) reply parent
Not a be-all skill but certainly a handy one. Who wants to limit their options renting a car in Europe? And seriously, can you really say you know how to drive if can’t drive stick? 😜
Hosen (@hosentime.bsky.social) reply parent
Rather ironic that they are buoying a would-be tyrant, the exact thing the right to bear arms was supposed to protect against. The mythology around gun ownership has been so twisted that ppl can’t see what is right in front of their faces. More availability of and access to guns = more dead kids.
Hosen (@hosentime.bsky.social) reply parent
I hate to say it but now may not be the time to address it given state of affairs. That said, it is truly bizarre to those of us outside of the US. That so many children can be simply be allowed to die for the sake of “freedom” is unfathomable. It’s completely fucked.
Hosen (@hosentime.bsky.social) reply parent
Maybe this is why unfettered access to guns is a bad idea. Just spitballing from Canada.
Hosen (@hosentime.bsky.social) reply parent
Count my family as the stupid cat owners who didn’t know that back in the day. Our cat lived to be 20 and ate a shit-ton of ppl food and nobody ever screened for onions and garlic. It was just dumb luck that nothing ever happened. But I’m just an Internet rando…
Hosen (@hosentime.bsky.social) reply parent
I didn’t know that they were toxic until I got my kitty. My family cat growing up got all kinds of people food & we didn’t know; but I don’t think my mom smothered meats in garlic (cloves!) like I do. My girl has IBD so I am especially careful now out of necessity; chronic diarrhea will do that.
Hosen (@hosentime.bsky.social) reply parent
Maybe it was its delivery but the warning was fair & important. Maybe you already knew that onions & garlic are toxic to cats (& dogs) & cooked Lily her own lamb sans them. But in the interest of keeping pets safe, I side with sharing the info.

When do we start seeing more ppl disappeared by ppl in no way associated with the government & just taking advantage?? Also, how did the courthouse just permit this to happen without proper ID/badges shown?? The whole thing is rooted in lawlessness & will have consequences beyond the obvious.
Hosen (@hosentime.bsky.social) reply parent
I saw a grooming place called Doggy Style in Montreal years ago. Was trying to see if it’s still there and apparently, the name is not uncommon!
Hosen (@hosentime.bsky.social) reply parent
Steve, your talent, energy and commitment to real dialogue on issues are unparalleled. Accordingly, it’s not surprising that you would have such a thoughtful approach to timing your departure and share the news in a way that leaves your audience satisfied despite the loss to their information diet.
Hosen (@hosentime.bsky.social) reply parent
I also say this & I’m also in TO. I cursed a guy last night riding his bike at full speed on the sidewalk who came up on me on Lakeshore - there are bike lanes! Etobicoke has many sidewalk riding offenders. So much so I guess that they have signs all over reminding ppl that it’s against the bylaw.

This really humanizes things. I wish your child a safe and rewarding experience here. 🙏
Hosen (@hosentime.bsky.social) reply parent
There is an unwillingness to confront reality in the US and continue the myth of exceptionalism. “It can’t be the guns.” I wonder if it’s not tied up in America’s celebration of its origin - revolution and frontier “building”. A country whose very being was built on violence.
Hosen (@hosentime.bsky.social) reply parent
Our gun laws changed after that and they continue to evolve. I’m not saying that Canada got it right bc we still have gun violence and femicide but we did something. But the religiosity around the 2A and ability to protect oneself is part of some kind of grand delusion in the US.
Hosen (@hosentime.bsky.social) reply parent
Not to be rude but this is part of American exceptionalism, which I think is actually a kind of hubris that reality doesn’t apply. In Canada, we had our worst school shooting in 1989 when an anti-feminist killed 14 female engineering students. We have a national day that is commemorated each year.
Hosen (@hosentime.bsky.social) reply parent
Banks are already doing these things. 🙄 Fraud costs them money which surprise(!), banks don’t like! Beefing up the laws may help but probably not - how many criminals consult the laws first before acting??
Hosen (@hosentime.bsky.social) reply parent

He’s been going downhill for the past few years but this is the nail in the coffin for me. He says it’s important to keep the lines of communication open with other side. Thats true for good faith actors, not aspiring authoritarians. After they have flouted the constitution repeatedly.
Hosen (@hosentime.bsky.social) reply parent
But I have no idea how the voter rolls work. Are they centralized federally and the provinces piggyback off them? It’s amazing how ignorant one can be when you take it for granted.
Hosen (@hosentime.bsky.social) reply parent
You’re welcome! I’m kind of fascinated myself bc we literally don’t hear anything about election sausage making here vs. constant stories in the US election shenanigans. But maybe I’m not aware of local issues?? EC runs our federal elections & Elections Ontario runs the provincial where I am.
Hosen (@hosentime.bsky.social) reply parent
The common terms Americans use for these kinds of things are always seem tinged with judgment and the whiff of Republican marketing. Like entitlements. (I may be wrong but entitlement is def not a term I hear in Canada.)
Hosen (@hosentime.bsky.social) reply parent
www.elections.ca/content.aspx... Interesting… will have to do more digging for a more fulsome story.
Hosen (@hosentime.bsky.social) reply parent
I know my question & points sound kind naive in the context of ongoing political machinations going back years. Sigh. I just don’t understand why the voting laws have never been shored up when the Dems had control of the house and senate. Admittedly, I am ignorant about how Canada worked this out.
Hosen (@hosentime.bsky.social) reply parent
Anyway, my point is there has to be a way to ensure simplified mechanics in the law. Opening the door citizen info via the IRS or Social Security for creating initial registrations.
Hosen (@hosentime.bsky.social) reply parent
You will get a card in the mail at election if you’ve registered. But I’m looking at the website and there are many ways to register/prove ID. I don’t know how they do it outside of income tax election. Not sure what I did the 1st time I voted to prove citizenship. I used to carry my BC in my youth
Hosen (@hosentime.bsky.social) reply parent
I’m wondering if there is a way to bake in the mechanics to make voter registration easier. In Canada, we have Elections Canada, which is a non-partisan body that manages our elections. When you file your taxes, there’s a box to allow your info to be passed to Elections Canada.

Ha! We know - at least the non Maple MAGA do - we unfortunately have some of those. The “they” is for anyone who didn’t take our Canadian sovereignty seriously and thinks it’s okay to make 51st state jokes (see Jimmy Fallon).

Same. The worst-case predictions from 2016 are coming true and it’s been very dispiriting. Seeing so many Americans taking to the streets offers a glimmer of hope. Keep it up! We are rooting for you all!

And resto music has gotten SO LOUD. I may be more bc my mom’s hearing has become very bad & it’s almost impossible to find a quiet table in a resto. But I also recall a time when restaurants didn’t really have music and when they did, it was definitely in the background not in the foreground.

Ha! I had no idea. I’ve also never had rabbits as pets. It’s nice that your buns share being the top. 🤣 I think Sunny Bunny (Beth’s girl bun) is exclusively a top.
Hosen (@hosentime.bsky.social) reply parent
Do you follow Beth Stern (Howard Stern’s better half) on Insta? She has cats and does cat rescue but has two resident bunnies, one of which dominates the other. The female (brown) regularly mounts the sweet male (white/grey). I don’t actually think she’s an asshole despite this practice.
Hosen (@hosentime.bsky.social) reply parent
And I thought this before Trump posted about it. Maher is arrogant or foolish to think that there is anything worthwhile or honourable about this exercise. He will gain nothing from the experience except the badge of collaborator and/or willful fool.
Hosen (@hosentime.bsky.social) reply parent
While I agree that we should connect with people with whom we disagree, meeting with Trump, especially at this time, is not that. He is causing harm in countless ways & has proven that he is unwilling to learn or change. Saying it’s an honour just to be invited to the White House is just BS cover.
Hosen (@hosentime.bsky.social) reply parent

Glad to see that we’re checking ourselves and our facts. Ontario’s current MMR vaccine rates for kids are abysmal and are what allowed this outbreak here. Shame on us. Anyway, that doesn’t change our feelings of betrayal and solidarity to decouple ourselves from the US. Elbows up!

Also, you typically see a lot of US flags flown together with Canada and Ontario flags here in the Toronto area - at rinks, marinas, tourist attractions, etc. The mayor of Mississauga (TO suburb of 750k) ordered them taken down bc she received a lot of requests. The anger is very real.
Hosen (@hosentime.bsky.social) reply parent
Thank you for your support! I am also inspired to see most Canadians unified on this as well. I’m trying to do my part like avoiding buying American products. Yesterday at the dollar store, I saw a large section of Canadian pride products like you would see leading up to Canada Day.
Hosen (@hosentime.bsky.social) reply parent
It’s not rhetoric. Many Canadians are boycotting the US - all of it. The Canadian dollar is also weak against the US$ right now so it’s giving Canadians extra reason not to visit. The Maine story is particularly poignant bc you have Quebeckers leaning into Canadian patriotism - that’s not normal.
Hosen (@hosentime.bsky.social) reply parent
While that’s probably true, it’s cold comfort to us Canadians and not something I would bet on. I thought that Americans couldn’t possibly vote him in again after J6 and I was very wrong. There also seems to be a large overlap of MAGA and military folks. The cult is real…
Hosen (@hosentime.bsky.social) reply parent
Always the young women at the tip of the spear too!
Hosen (@hosentime.bsky.social) reply parent
You need the big guns: Get a rescue cat. Adopt one from Beth Stern (Howard’s better half). The cat-con effect is real; just look at Stone Cold Steve Austin’s Instagram. I didn’t watch him on WWE but I follow him and his 2 cats - and I’m one of MANY who do.
Hosen (@hosentime.bsky.social) reply parent
Supply management system. We pay more on average but price changes are smoother. Also, and I think likely more critical (but I’m no farm scientist / economist), average egg farm size is much smaller at 25,000 birds in Canada vs. US farms which can be staggeringly larger, some in millions.
Hosen (@hosentime.bsky.social) reply parent
Seriously! I was just admiring the number of hammocks. They’re obviously handmade which goes to show how respected the cats were. ❤️❤️❤️
