I probably still have an audio tape of myself around 5 or 6 years old eating a biscuit and a piece of cheese. "*pause* yum biscuit! *pause* yuck cheese! *pause* yum biscuit! *pause* yuck cheese!" Repeat until one or the other ran out. Somehow nobody at all suspected that I might have been autistic.

In the gap, the spoof British Police Drama, A Touch of Cloth, was superb in its deadpan delivery and blink-and-you'll-miss-it gags. Highly recommend giving it a watch or two (3 seasons of 3 episodes each)

Yeah, most people think LLMs either are better than they are, or think they're being sold something better than it actually is. It is incredibly frustrating for those of us who design & build. I'm taking a break from my career. It's like people are buying sheds thinking they're skyscrapers.

Do you eat baked potato? Do you eat fried potato? Sliced potato? Potato dauphinois? Mashed potato? Do you like all of those? Or is there one, including not listed, that you dislike? The hypothesis is that everyone has one that they dislike. The author invites others to express their own preference.
Hugh Phœnix-Hulme (@hph.pw) reply parent
So my primary school would serve "mashed potatoes" that were grey, watery and had lumps in them. I'd gag if I felt a potato lump at the back of my throat. Put me off mashed potatoes for life, I just won't touch them prepared like that. IDC how different they are, or how much anyone else likes them.

Well, maybe not that one specifically since it's a 33.6K which wouldn't have been released until the mid-to-late 90s. But it looks like they were using the same case design for a long time. This one looks like it has a more similar colour.

I want to like bsky, but it seems like you can be "somebody" by posting a lot and get your posts seen, or be "nobody" (even to your friends) and follow a few "somebodies". It doesn't fit the need of groups of real-life friends, and so I can't recommend it to those still enduring Zuckville.

There is a theory that if electrons truly cannot be destroyed, and time ping-pongs from one end to the other, then all electrons we observe may actually be the same electron, bouncing back and forth through time. This could be our only iteration, or this could be one of billions.

Hugh Phœnix-Hulme (@hph.pw) reply parent
That level is very vendor-specific, could be product-line-specific, and it's not usually visible to user code. You might reveal it by causing race conditions (e.g. feeding the same image as input and output to a fragment shader)
Hugh Phœnix-Hulme (@hph.pw) reply parent
The correct names for an instance are a thread or invocation, the correct names for a block is a workgroup or threadgroup, the correct names for a whole set of blocks is a dispatch or a grid. The in-between bit, where the workgroups get grouped, might be a wave, wavefront, warp, batch, pool...
Hugh Phœnix-Hulme (@hph.pw) reply parent
OR maybe there are write operations, so it groups blocks that use different pages so that there's less contention. But it's all decided by the driver, and it's very fast. So it appears random to human eyes. The instances themselves run "in lockstep" instruction by instruction.
Hugh Phœnix-Hulme (@hph.pw) reply parent
Not exactly. If using compute kernels/shaders one can choose the dimensions of the blocks that get scheduled. Then the driver chooses how to schedule them, which it might do heuristically. So it may detect that several "blocks" will have some similar array page access, and group them together.

I put this font together sometime in the early-to-mid 90s (with this software), I found it in the wild recently and it looks like about 1/3rd of the nonstandard DOS fonts out there used it as a base (they have most of my <32 chars + some of my >128 chars)
Hugh Phœnix-Hulme (@hph.pw) reply parent
Yeah I get that, it was just an observation. There's also a utilitarian aspect to it, this font "does the job" which was deemed more important than stylistic flair. In PC BIOS fonts we see some variation, but they're largely the same as one another.
Hugh Phœnix-Hulme (@hph.pw) reply parent
Looks like a very standard "Motorola-chargen-style" font, found on everything from 80s micros to supermarket till customer displays. But if you're working in a 6x8 space, there's not much room for creativity if you want to maintain readability.

Hugh Phœnix-Hulme (@hph.pw) reply parent

I have physical hardware because I've got an nvidia GPU in my main machine, then two test boxes with Arc and Radeon GPUs. Intel drivers balk at some GLSL (e.g. `1.` vs `1.0`). Who knows what else. VM for Lytro Illum and anything else that needs Windows USB, e.g. monitor firmware.
