My wife wanted to move to the burbs. I desperately wanted to stay in the city. We compromised by buying a SFH with a yard in the Bronx. Lower taxes, only needing one car, and UPK make living in the city cheaper than any of the suburbs with a comparable commute.

I would simply make my kids ride the bus instead of spending the majority of my day dropping off and picking up my kids from school.

Are you referring to the freight tunnel under the harbor from Elizabeth to Brooklyn? Because my theory is that will get built after the BQE collapses.

I just looked up Kiryas Joel. It’s so high because it only serves special education classes.

Cream-crowned Sparrow it is! Endemic to the Northern Rockies. Zonotrichia Coltoni. You write the paper, I’ll peer review it.
Tim Graves (@ibirdsometimes.bsky.social) reply parent
The sparrow is an immature White-crowned Sparrow.

In New York, buses sometimes just disappear off the tracker. I’ve also had busses show up to my stop, discharge all the passengers, and go out of service mid-route.

Especially interesting because Torres endorsed Cuomo before he even entered the race. I think he’ll go whichever way the wind seems to be blowing.

If I were the reviewer and you gave a detailed description of what you heard and how you ruled out similar calls, I would accept it.

That being said, I’ve never ridden the SAS because I live in the Bronx so there’s basically no way for me to access it. I’ll definitely use it one it connects to 125th.

I understand that Phase 2 is expected to generate less ridership than Phase 1, so I’m not sure if it’s a “damn good investment” unless they bring costs way down.

Ironically, when Moses built three separate highways through Van Cortlandt Park he made some parts of the park so inaccessible that they can only be used for hiking and nature observation.

My point is that when small cities make transit free they get big ridership increases and moderate mode shift at a relatively low cost. NYC’s free bus pilot program showed ridership increase, no mode shift from cars and very high cost. What works in one place doesn’t necessarily work in another.
Tim Graves (@ibirdsometimes.bsky.social) reply parent
That would make Tucson’s fare box recovery about 8%. NYC’s is 26%. That’s a huge difference.
Tim Graves (@ibirdsometimes.bsky.social) reply parent
NYC has much higher transit usage than Tucson and therefore has fares cover a much higher percentage of transit costs. Experts estimate that making NYC busses free will cost between $700 million and $1 billion per year.
Tim Graves (@ibirdsometimes.bsky.social) reply parent
I was mistaken. Apparently A division cars can fit through the tunnel. It’s the B division cars that won’t fit. www.vanshnookenraggen.com/_index/2025/...
Tim Graves (@ibirdsometimes.bsky.social) reply parent
They will build a new tunnel under All Faiths Cemetery, but there is an existing tunnel by Broadway Junction that is too narrow for A division trains.
Tim Graves (@ibirdsometimes.bsky.social) reply parent
I think that free busses are a bad and possibly disastrous idea and I’m still voting for that guy so hard.
Tim Graves (@ibirdsometimes.bsky.social) reply parent
I’m not calling you greedy, but that’s only about 14% of your gross income on rent. You should be able to afford an apartment about twice as expensive as the one you’re in now.
Tim Graves (@ibirdsometimes.bsky.social) reply parent
As far as I can tell, Mamdani is not proposing the construction of new NYCHA units, unlike that communist Rudy Giuliani who built lots of NYCHA projects.
Tim Graves (@ibirdsometimes.bsky.social) reply parent
There is free street parking on the vast majority of NYC streets. Only commercial thoroughfares have metered parking. In most neighborhoods you have to move your car once or twice a week for street cleaning.
Tim Graves (@ibirdsometimes.bsky.social) reply parent
I forgot there is a Dyre Ave in Manhattan so I got confused about why you thought it was only 220 m from the end of the 5 train to the 7 train.

I think this cicada killer is trying to drag this cicada into the drain in our driveway instead of digging its own burrow. Probably not a smart move considering they’re too big to fit through the holes in the drain cover.

As I understand it, this will be a two-track line that will make every stop on every trip. Therefore, shouldn’t it be called the Interborough Local?

That being said, as someone who has to go to all corners of the city for work, an IBX to the Bronx could be the key to me never having to drive in the five boroughs for work ever again.
Tim Graves (@ibirdsometimes.bsky.social) reply parent
Extending the IBX to the Bronx would limit the amount of service it could provide given the constraints of the Hell Gate Bridge. I believe the current design preserves the possibility of a Bx extension.

There’s a four-story building going up across the street from the playground in my neighborhood. Most of the negative comments on the neighborhood Facebook group focus on the proximity to the playground. I guess they can’t imagine that families with young kids might move in.

He’s also winning car owners and those who rarely or never take transit.
Tim Graves (@ibirdsometimes.bsky.social) reply parent
My neighborhood was downzoned by Giuliani and downzoned again by Bloomberg. You used to be able to build 4-story apartment buildings. Now everything has to be a 1 or 2 family detached house.

Fast busses are politically impossible for Cuomo given his coalition. They are not politically impossible for Mamdani.

I remember reading that Chuck Schumer used to partner with the Mets and Yankees in community projects so it would get covered on the sports page. That way people who don’t necessarily read about politics get a positive impression of him. Targeting small outlets is smart.

Our local sprayground looks similar, but there are buckets at the end of some of the sprayers and when they are close to full they tip over a dump a bunch of water at once. Big hit in the neighborhood.

Where are you getting the 17% number from? The CPI has food inflation on track for a 3% increase for 2025. www.usinflationcalculator.com/inflation/fo...
Tim Graves (@ibirdsometimes.bsky.social) reply parent
Problems get covered when they get worse, not when they get better. That phenomenon is not unique to Biden/Trump.
Tim Graves (@ibirdsometimes.bsky.social) reply parent
I’m not discounting your experience, I’m just giving you the CPI numbers, which reflect an average across the US.
Tim Graves (@ibirdsometimes.bsky.social) reply parent
I’m not trying to cover for Trump. I’m just pointing out that Biden got inflation under control and Trump’s tariffs haven’t kicked in enough to massively distort the CPI. Until the CPI jumps to 2021-2022 levels, you’re not going to see it covered the same way it was then.
Tim Graves (@ibirdsometimes.bsky.social) reply parent
Most of our friends left Brooklyn for Jersey when they had kids, but my wife and I bought a SFH in the Bronx. Same size house as the suburbs at roughly the same price (on a much smaller lot). Way lower taxes, UPK, and only needing one car makes it way more affordable than South Orange.

I think we should follow in the footsteps of Euclid by giving up and allowing the stuff to get built that we didn’t want built in the first place. (The Ambler site was formerly a GM plant and is currently a warehouse for surplus industrial supplies.)
