I agree with most of that, but no objection to mass 😉. Catholicism may have its faults but they aren't really a threat to society.

Most ECHR members are a "show me your papers" country. (one justification in the UK for not having an ID card is about refugees, but not how you'd think) …it's that by the time the far right have got round to demanding everybody has one, the people who need to flee might have had time to get away.

Labour can't even do the centre. Mixing socialism with nationalism and the politics of exclusion is doomed, and already isn't working. It's like blending red with cyan and hoping for yellow. You might get white if mixing light, but if you try it with ink you just get something dark and ugly.

I think many Americans wrongly believe there would be one clear unambiguous moment where we go from “democracy” to “authoritarianism.” Instead, this is exactly how it happens — a blurring here, a norm destroyed there, a presidential diktat unchallenged. Then you wake up one morning and our country is different. Today, August 25, 2025, is that morning. Something is materially different in our country this week than last.

There are lots of people who think you should be able to incite terror-linked arson that could also lead to murder, and either not be guilty, or face a minor ticking off. I don't agree with any of those people.

"If you can't face being shamed for all time, don't do the war crime." Except Israel, apparently, wants to bring on the shame. What would it take for the UN to intervene? This isn't a matter of #PalestineSolidarity, it's about stopping a crime against humanity itself.
