This just reminded me that around 1980, my older brother got a job in an appliance store that dabbled in TVs and early home video. I was able to come by on slow days and watch the original uncut version on videodisc anyway - so jokes on you, Mom & Dad!

I'm not just talking about Spielberg here, but the adapted screenplay, cinematography, costumes, performance - all were high-quality by people who obviously wanted to do this remake right.
I saw his West Side Story in theatres, and it was absolute, eye-popping genius level craftwork from everyone involved. Just an incredibly well-made motion picture that already had huge shoes to fill. I actually felt sad watching it because so few people bothered to give it a shot.
