I’m just really fucking salty today that the symbols and language of American Patriotism have been fully co-opted by a right wing authoritarian/Christian coalition that more closely resembles the Confederacy in appearance, values, and goals than the secular liberal American tradition.

Why is the answer never to respect that voters are adults who make choices? The loud, repeated message is “close hospitals and nursing homes in my community, taking money from cities to pay for them makes me feel left behind.” You don’t have to agree, but have the respect to listen.

I have never seen so many public servants protest the mismanagement of a government. Trumpists will point to this as proof of the deep state, but the reality is that these are professionals who are desperately trying to get the public to understand how bad things are.

this is correct and you can see it in the runup to basically every severe crisis, even as it becomes increasingly obvious one is coming 2008 was a great example - "the entire financial system is going to start falling apart like dominoes" was a bridge too far for conventional wisdom until it wasn't

I feel like the juxtaposition of sending masked agents to arrest and haul off “illegal” brown people to foreign gulags while sending RFK talk about depression meds in response to mostly white domestic terrorists committing mass shootings and sending cops on bogus school raids is a choice.

sure. or…take the quickest and easiest opportunity for real power and wrangle the partisan sheep to commandeer the party from within. I think progressives like Zohran and AOC are playing that game, and winning. But cynically hurling shit at it from the trees and hoping it dies is also a strategy.

Right?! And undoing that and discrediting everything about it in the minds of Americans has very literally been the core unifying thread of right wing politics and propaganda ever since.

The only minor caveat I'd add as a historian is that while the current form of aggressive and unapologetic authoritarianism consolidated at the federal level is unprecedented in US History, the political culture of authoritarianism has been a pretty common feature at a more localized level.
