My statement on @nadler.house.gov’s decision not to seek re-election next year.

“For more than thirty years, when New Yorkers needed a champion, we have turned to Jerry Nadler—and he has delivered for us time and again. Jerry stood alongside gay and trans Americans when it was politically unpopular, voted with courage—not calculus—against the Iraq War and the Patriot Act, stood steadfast alongside the first responders and families sickened after 9/11, and led efforts to hold a lawless Trump administration accountable. Few leaders possess his record of principled progressivism, and fewer can claim to have made such an enduring impact on the fabric of our city. Congress will be worse off without his leadership, but our democracy will be better for the selflessness that has defined a legendary career.”

Newsom, Brandon, and Pritzker have been far more clear-eyed about the stakes than Dem leadership. There is nothing now more important than calling the GOP and Trump what they are and calling on Americans to honor our country's most sacred values.

Gov. Pritzker: "There is no emergency that warrants the President of the U.S. federalizing the Illinois National Guard." "Trump is attempting to manufacture a crisis, politicize Americans who serve in uniform, and continue abusing his power to distract from the pain he is causing working families."

Agreed. I think the actual update they went with was.... A choice. But I feel like we can't even truly discuss the merits of the new branding due to the "Keep politics outta my . . . " folks shoehorning politics into this.

Another issue where the "keep politics outta my . . . " crowd drowned an issue in politics, so we can't even have a real discussion on how poor management is creating chaos that will adversely affect low-paid workers who need these jobs.

Again: this is why you don't play these stupid games. And, I'm sorry, but: this is also the reason why the people behind the Bulwark lost their own base to a reality TV conman.

Congrats on helping legitimize the idea of sending the troops into Baltimore, @thebulwark.com. I'm sure your enlightened centrism on this issue will ensure that the troops treat each citizen with mad respect as they invade their city over imaginary boogeymen.

This is all a fight over words and phrases approximately 8% of the voting population even sees. The overwhelming majority of voters are simply not terminally online in politics enough to even grasp the debate. This is a tempest in a teapot.

You guys literally lost your party to delusional thinking... And your answer seems to be leaning into it more with the general population. Why are you repeating your own mistakes?

I know you have good intentions, but it will never end well for play into delusional thinking or disinformation. You cannot govern a population divorced from reality. The aim must be to bring them back to reality, not coddle their fantastical beliefs.

The confusion + feeling of betrayal ("Hey, I'm trying to help! I don't like Trump either") pushes an intensely negative reaction that exaggerates the ubiquity of similar such interactions in our political discourse. 2/2

My most charitable theory goes like this: there are folks who recognize the GOP is really bad, but aren't terminally online in politics. They use terms traditionally acceptable that activists have discarded for one reason or another, and they get jumped online for using it. 1/2

Definitely someone who was going to vote for Democrats, walking into the voting booth: "Incarcerated people MY ASS!!"

Like, you guys really think there's a single person who was going to vote for Dems, then went into the booth muttering to themselves "Incarcerated people MY ASS!"?????

Going to be honest: 90%+ of Americans are not terminally online for politics and likely don't ever even hear these words. This entire discussions is centered on the terminally online, and they simply cannot see it because they're on too deep.

I can 100% assure you that folks who are not terminally online for politics do not run into these words. I know many of them. This is literally about an incredibly small sub-section of folks who follow political topics online, which further exposes how utterly stupid it is.

Again, people are explaining to you that the Dem candidates aren't actually putting up roadblocks. You're trying to hold the party accountable for everything anyone who votes for them says. It's stupid. Stop listening to folks who lost their own party to Trump.

There are many more on the list that Democrats have rarely used at all, or that Republicans have used as many times. No need to play the fascists' game.

You might want to check for actual data on who is using these words. For example, in the only actual review of communications materials I've seen for this topic, Democrats aren't using Privilege nearly as much as Republicans. Same for many of the other words.
