Ok that's enough chatting about "Ai" today. I really wish we made LLM popular as a term instead of "Ai"--if only to arm people with a critical distinction about for example medicine or astronomy, etc. where LLMs are immensely useful and accurate.

Look, I have progressive colleagues on the cutting edge of Ai getting implemented in K-12--who still are enabling Ai. They are not the enemy. We have shared interests, and what they need is someone making the connection to far Right wing projects. They care about every student and their communities.

Yeah. It is super disheartening. They're good people, teachers, and care for their students. A few, here and there, bring up systems level and ethics concerns. Most often it is in a preface that you then skip over in the body.
I think it reflects work conditions. Comp Sci teachers are excited by the tool and what it can do. It gives them increased status as necessary for jobs. For others. Do they feel they have power and agency? Are they alienated from systems change? They're being told they need to adopt Ai.
I think a lot of teachers are being emotionally primed to give up that fight. Even the toothpaste analogy wouldn't work because the most conversation terminating statement by them is, "it's inevitable, it's too late, we have no choice." It's just really really common they frame it that way.
It's been a massive push to get ethics and impacts to be fronted as a major educational responsibility to K-12 students and teachers. This isn't just a tool then, it's a tool being deployed in particular ways by corporations.
Totally fair to me. I work with K-12 public school teachers--a terrain in which the toothpaste analogy is deadly and fatalistic. What I can't do is deny Ai can be "useful" or "improves your teaching," as several are experts on using it. They don't talk about the direct assaault : (

This is about getting school districts to pay large contracts. That's the push. Replace teachers. So we have to stop being complicit with afatalism that it's too late in public education.
This is a route to destroy unions of public school workers, increase class sizes, make small classes a luxery, and ultimately mandate teachers use Ai "efficiently" enough to justify the additional labor.
I just want resistance, outright no's this isn't good for public education. I'd like us to dispense with the fatalism of we have no choice, it's inevitable, it's too late. My teacher friends are waging a battle. I think it foolish. AI adoption will make teachers the next mass firings.

I want to give some grace for those in despair.
In GOTV with SURJ, they make space for negative emotions, a place to see others feel the same. They don't end there though. They bring us to the next step of joy, celebrating not only wins but inspiration--a centering of hope and values.
The pressure on them is of course to stay silent because despair can infect others. True, emotional regulation is our responsibility. . But better expressed here I think than inside community organizing.
Anyway this is a distant engagement with someone's post of "I have given up. I'm done with service to the Dem party." Their post escaped containment. I do think it helpful that people can express despair, because you can't work out of it by yourself. That's why community joy is so important.
I still can't tell the difference though. For me faith and hope is always tenuous, so what happens when both die? I think I prefer hope is what carries us when faith dies. But not sure it would make sense.
