It would be really easy as a DM to just railroad players down your set path. And when writing your own homebrew campaign it's really tempting. I find the randomness and adaptability a much better creative challenge. Let them explore and develop the world that they want to play in!
Last night while DMing my Friday #dungeonsanddragons campaign, one player asked if the city had underground fighting. And when I built this part of the campaign it didn't.... But it does not. One of my favorite parts of the game is thinking on my feet and adapting to what my players want.
