She is using it as a transcription service. She is pretty clear that she is not using it to diagnose. As someone who has been the secretary of many organizations and committees, it seems like making a record of conversation is a reasonable use of the technology

Once upon a time, popular authors like Asimov would put their name on anthologies of stuff they read that inspired them. Readers will look up their favorite authors to find out their influences. They don't need to start with those earlier authors.

There has been quite a bit of writing lately about younger people having a lack of social skills - lots of theories of course - but that wouldn't explain experienced older folks not applying
This. I cannot emphasize enough how influencer and hustle culture have completely changed the internet from "weird and wonderful things people make for the heck of it" to algorithm chasing joylessness.
What's interesting here is that the usage strategies are less lazy than I might have anticipated. One student went through 103 prompts and a total of 58,000 words in the process of co-writing an essay with ChatGPT.
I emphasize the term academic research in my college comp classes to set the skills apart from personal browsing
People need to put The Jungle on the syllabus - the full novel, not just the food contamination parts. Immigration, worker abuse, limited options for young men, gender discrimination, socialism, AND an author who ran for public office on issues that still resonate
And if you don't properly cite or attribute, there are consequences, not to mention, someone PAID for the version I read
On the flip side, genre writers can be dismissive of more literary styles. I spent all of graduate school threading these needles.
LLMs are not a research or writing tool, full stop. It cannot be trusted to generate true information. To the extent that it shows its sources and you can check them, it's just adding another layer of work on top of using a search engine. The primary use people are selling is openly fraudulent.

Second! Also highly recommend Hogan's and Lepage-Richer's "Extractive AI," which says, in part: "Conceiving of AI as an agenda-setting industry as opposed to a discrete technology is essential to develop policy frameworks that are truly adapted to AIās social, environmental, and economic impact."
my children went to a Missouri Synod Lutheran grade school (there were reasons, mainly geographic), and the first time I was at a service and a group of first graders sang "God loves me dearly, even me" it struck me that this was really hitting the man as sinner unworthy of God's favor aspect
