I have a BA in physics. A Ph.D in history. I would never try to do math like this in my head. There is no point to it. Do it longhand. In either case, I can reason my way through problems, whether in math or history. Can the same be said about AI?

My first class is always on "History as an academic discipline." We examine interpretive vs. factual questions; arguments vs. beliefs; analysis of evidence; historiography lite. The point. Disciplines have rules.
