Medicare for all, paid leave, universal childcare. Busting up big corporations and tackling Wall Street’s greed. Getting big money out of politics. Supporting unions and fighting for higher wages. If Dems want to win back working people, this is the agenda they must support.
The GOP is slaughtering our children, our adults, pregnant women, and anyone else they don't happen to agree with. They want to cause harm to as many as possible.
I was raised Catholic. As a result, I fear nearly all religious people. I know a few who can somehow remain decent, while still being religious, but not many.

It is still surprising to me that so many people cling to superstitious nonsense, including using it to justify harm. Religion is dangerous because it touts itself as a higher cause for which it is justifiable to commit terrible acts.
Today I met with 20 great resident doctors at University of Chicago, Northwestern and University of Illinois hospitals. Very distressing. These young doctors have formed unions because of 80 hour work weeks, inadequate pay and stressful working conditions. They deserve better.
Newsom would be a lot more credible if California got their act together so that they could actually build things like rail and houses. These issues are nationwide, but even more pronounced in CA.

What I see from the health sciences is a near complete perversion of science: papers and grants are first and foremost and science second. With academic programs it is all about training for a job. I don't like it, but that is where we are at.

I use AI every day for coding, exploring ideas, etc. The trick is in knowing what to use them for, how to use them, and when to call it quits or pivot. I also review everything the AI produces. a year ago, I could not use AI for much serious work.
I also find the review process problematic. So yes, three reviewers "review" your work... maybe. The reviews are extremely idiosyncratic and done without access to the underlying data, analysis code, etc. I often find that they distort my work more than they help it.
Plenty of evidence that (at least certain parts of science) has a reproducibility problem. This is especially bad in healthcare, since the data is often hard or impossible to get. When I go over work, such as SQL queries of identifiable EHR data I find nearly endless issues.

Poverty has long been criminalized in the US and that has gotten worse over time. The Houston Press had a nice article on this back around 1999, specifically addressing Houston-area laws that turn poor people into criminals for lack of funds to fix and do minor things.
Is there some reason why the conservatives on the court want to destroy checks and balances and essentially create an autocracy? Is it just simple payback for getting appointed? Kickbacks?

What many might not realize is that US businesses that make stuff in the US are also hurting, because non-US customers are boycotting US products. We still make a lot of niche products. Of course, many US businesses also depend on foreign equipment and parts.
Clearly a lot of the kids from 50 60 and 70 years ago are not alright. If they were they would not have voted for a party that has destroyed our democracy.
Since it is so hard to make much in a business, I've often wondered if they only way to truly amass that much money is by externalizing costs, which of course means hurting someone or something, including future generations.

I hear much worse from my family, including insults directed toward me (I'm a prof and have been in higher ed since 1980 first as a student, then faculty). My relatives have gone down the Fox/MAGA rabbit hole more and more over the last 30 years or so.
A lot people in those institutions don't seem to fully appreciate what is happening. I still see too many people in academia with an attitude that it will all work out somehow and funding will be restored.

I also feel that the DNC is partly to blame here. They needed to address real issues facing rural voters and they did not do that directly enough. They also forced Hilary and Biden on us, then refused to stop Biden early enough.
The GOP and media like Fox News did this prior to Trump. Trump and the current GOP are just putting the icing on the cake. I watched this happening over the past 30+ years to my relatives in rural Ohio and KY. Nothing I did or said or showed them could stop their descent.

Even in college its all about the metrics. Students admitted, students graduated, time to graduation, papers published, grant dollars obtained, etc. Education and science take a backseat to the metrics.

My parents are MAGAts on a steady diet of Fox News, Newsmax and OAN every day. I am not a MAGAt. But then I was raised Catholic and by high school was an atheist even though everyone around me was religious. I do ask why, but I think the answer lies in my self-developed views of the world.

I'd be interested in seeing any published work in this area. There are papers estimating causal effects of long-term exposure of 1-2 pollutants, but I suspect the challenge to estimating the effect of many is that it would be hard to get a well-defined causal contrast.

Take a look at the 4-5 tests required to pass high school in Texas. The passing rate (which doesn't take much) is super low. An educated adult who has not had the classes would likely pass, yet Texas students have a lot of trouble passing.

When did Germany stop investing in unis? My experience is from the early 90's when I spent quite a lot of time at Uni Regensburg and a bit at Potsdam and TU Chemnitz. Things seemed fine then, though some profs were clearly taking advantage of the system, which limited positions for new profs.

I just got the official email from the NSF about the drastic cuts and I think the correct translation is "if you are a young researcher who still wants to do science strongly consider leaving the United States if you can." which, really, is not an ideal message to be sending.
