Also this week: a new (old) way of dividing Europe, courtesy of the Knights of St John...

A new (very old) way of carving up Europe The things I am interested in, you will no doubt have noticed, include both the origins of national identities, and alternative ways of breaking up the world. I was thus delighted, on my recent visit to Malta, to learn about the langues, the administrative divisions into which the Order of Knights of the Hospital of Saint John of Jerusalem – the military order which ran the island for over two and a half centuries3 – divided Europe. Here they are now: When the system of the langues was established in the 14th century, there were seven langues split according to ethno-linguistic divisions: Langue of Auvergne Langue of France Langue of Provence Langue of Aragon Langue of Italy Langue of Germany (including all of the Holy Roman Empire as well as Scandinavia, Hungary and Poland) Langue of England (including Scotland and Ireland) In 1462, the Langue of Aragon was divided with the creation of Langue of Castille, León and Portugal The Langue of England was dissolved in the mid-16th century following the English Reformation. The langue was reinstituted by Grand Master Emmanuel de Rohan-Polduc in 1784 as the Anglo-Bavarian Langue, which also included Bavarian and Polish knights. A helpful list, stolen from Wikipedia. Some explanation may be necessary here. The Knights Hospitaller, to give them their snazzier title, were an international military order established in the Kingdom of Jerusalem in the 12th century; and as with so many things that grew out of the delightful era of the Crusades, it drew its cheerful band of heavily armed religious nuts from all over Europe. Later – first in Rhodes (1310-1522), then Malta (1530-1798) – it occupied an island, and acted in ways that looked increasingly like a state. But not entirely like one, because it still had branches spread across the whole of Latin Christendom. (The only state I can think of today with a remotely similar structure is, not coincidentally, the Holy See in the …

"Like so many positions taken by the Labour party, all the way back to Brexit, the people who are meant to be impressed by this will find it inauthentic; meanwhile everyone else will be put off by the fact the government’s taken this stance at all."

Guys will advocate for processes that by their own account have brought tragedy and misery, that everything we know suggests will make everyone involved worse off and less secure, rather than admit that maybe the 2010 to 2024 government failed through no-one's fault but its own.

You probably know that the voices of Charley and Tony were sampled on a Prodigy record, but I can also add that Tony went on to become my Head of Sixth Form. His voice as a child may be annoying but as an adult he was thoroughly sound on pastoral care. He took Charley’s lessons to heart.

Yeah, we're in talks, doubt we'll still be there by the end of the year. But my life imploded in relatively recent memory due to a major bereavement so I've not had the strength for making big changes that come with serious financial risks, sorry.

...AND Charley says here’s some more public information. jonn.substack.com/p/the-eleven...

Anyway: I’ve already written about the seven public information films made by Halas and Batchelor to explain the policies of the Labour government of Clement Attlee in the late 1940s. (I then had to do it again, because I didn’t do it properly the first time.) During the course of my research, I discovered something confusing: in the 1970s there was a second series of British public information films concerning a character named Charley, who had the same spelling and everything. He was clearly not a close relative of the first one, though: this one was a cat. a screenshot showing an annoying child and a massive cat with a fishbone What a punchable child. In the six Charley Says films, Charley doesn’t actually speak a word. But Charley and his best friend Tony – a human child with a deeply annoying voice – do get into a series of scrapes, each of which teaches them a little something about how to exist in the world without getting yourself maimed, killed or kidnapped by sinister passers-by. You can get a sense of what everyday safety issues were believed to be afflicting British children in 1973 from the titles: “Falling in the Water”, “In the Kitchen”, “Strangers”, “Matches”. There’s also “Charley’s Tea Party” (about not yanking tablecloths in a potentially hazardous way) and “Mummy Should Know” (not nearly as filthy as it sounds).
