There is a mitzvah not to hate Egyptians or Edomites that is hard. It is a commandment to love PEOPLE who belong to a group that has harmed us. I think itโ€™s a good reminder to separate people from leaders. www.hadar.org/torah-tefill... www.sefaria.org/Deuteronomy....

Screenshot of LIVING IN THE DOUBLE EXPOSURE by Rabbi Tali Adler on Hadar.org Egypt is a place caught in a double exposure. For the Jews, Egypt has long been a nightmare, a place of slavery and oppression, of beatings and cold-blooded murder. One imagines that for the Jews in Egypt, every place must have a secret meaning: beautiful houses as places of servitude, cool bathing spots in the river as the place where baby boys drown. The first plagues do the work of making that double exposure visible to the rest of the population. Both of the first two plagues begin in the Nile where Jewish boys were drowned. The first, blood, makes it clear that the Nile, the source of life for the Egyptian people-the place where even Bat Paroah, the woman who saved Mose bathed-is actually a site of mass murder. All of Egypt, suddenly, is forced to confront the truth that what is life-giving and sustaining for them has been the locus of unbearable suffering for the people they oppress. The second plague, the frogs, exposes the horror even more explicitly. The frogs, we are told, emerge from the Nile itself-still, presumably, filled with blood. In picturing the image of the frogs-small, slimy creatures crawling out of the river used as a mass infant grave-it is easy to imagine that as the frogs started to emerge, people thought that they were seeing thousands of ghosts emerge from their watery graves.

Since the old Rabbis rejected the idea that this was a rejection of cross-dressing for self-expression, modern Rabbis read it as a warning against the harm that comes from denying your true gender or other part of your true self.

Page 257 of Torah Queeries Classical Jewish scholars did not accept such a justification for narrow-minded- ness. Neither should we. Rather, we can flip mainstream understandings of this verse on their head and understand the central verse from this parasha (Deut. 22:5) as a positive mitzvah: a sacred obligation to present the fullness of our gender as authen- tically as possible. Unfortunately, not everyone is able to fulfill this mitzvah without endangering their life or livelihood, and the protection of human life always comes first in Judaism. But the Torah wants us to be able to be true to ourselves, whoever we are: in all our sequined, buttoned-down, spikey-haired, or bow-tied glory. Next, we come to the second part of our prohibition: that we must not cover up our gender in order to cause harm. Transgender and genderqueerยฒ people who hide under the clothing of the gender they were assigned-rather than expressing them- selves as they really are suffer terrible harm. Among transgender people, rates of depression, suicide, and destructive self-medication are astronomical. Page 256 of Torah Queeries Each and every soul is created in the multifaceted image of the Creator. When we try to conceal that uniqueness, we cause ourselves pain. And when we ask oth- ers to obscure themselves, we cause them harm. The great majority of our parasha is concerned with the minute details of preventing harm. The verses just before the infamous verse teach that if we find a lost object, we are obligated to restore it to its owner, and if we see that someone's donkey has fallen down, we are required to help that person lift the animal up. The verse immediately following instructs us never to hurt a mother bird as we are collecting her eggs. And the very next verse commands us to build a guardrail around the roof of our houses to prevent anyone from falling off. The verse about what to wear is nestled among mitzvot that guide us toward exquisite levels of empathy, gentleness, and responsibility toward all of creation.

Some I learned about Parashat Ki Teitzei, which includes Devarim 22:5, which is used by fundamentalist Christians as a prohibition against cross dressing. The rabbis of the Talmud, Rashi and the Ramban all agree this is in context of idolatry or deceiving people, others it is totally permitted.

Page 255 of Torah Queeries Torah Commentary This verse is familiar to many of us, because it has long been understood as a ban on Page 255 of Torah Queeries Torah Commentary The great medieval commentator Rashi follows the Talmudic lead. In 17:14, God says the people can appoint a king, but the king has to be able to make a copy of the Torah. Lots of debate about what that means, which leads to conclusion you need to carry a small Torah with some verses with you. They have even found amulets like this ajr.edu/parashat-sho...

Screenshot of Parashat Shoftim Dave Torah by Rabbi Enid C. Lader on ajr.org king to write a โ€œMishneh Torah.โ€ Rashi teaches that โ€œMishneh Torahโ€ does not mean a copy of the Torah, but the king is enjoined โ€œto write two scrolls of the Law, one that is placed in his treasury and the other that goes out and comes in with him (i.e. a small scroll which he carries everywhere with him).โ€ The rabbis of Sanhedrin 21b go on to describe that small scroll: The baraita continues: With regard to the one that goes out and comes in with him, he makes it very small, like an amulet, and he hangs it on his arm, as it is stated: โ€œI have set the Lord always before me; He is at my right hand, that I shall not be movedโ€ (Psalms 16:8). This alludes to the small Torah scroll that is always on his right hand. For the Netivot Shalom, these two scrolls correspond to a personal scroll that we keep in our own treasury โ€“ our own home, and the second scroll is the one we carry with us out into our daily lives. Both scrolls elevate our lives โ€“ when we sit in our homes and when we walk by the way. Always in the presence of God. Screenshot with pictures of the amulets and text They are some five hundred years older than the Dead Sea Scrolls. These silver scrolls were found in 1979 in Chamber 25 of Cave 24 at Ketef Hinnom (i.e. the shoulder of Hinnom), during excavations conducted by a team under the supervision of Gabriel Barkay, who was then professor of archaeology at Tel Aviv University. The amulets, inscribed with ancient Hebrew script, were found rolled into tiny scrolls in a burial cave in Jerusalem. They were incised with a sharp, thin stylus, no thicker than a hairโ€™s breadth, and thus deciphering the inscription was difficult. The lower parts of both inscriptions have been identified as a version of Numbers 6:24โ€“26 (known as the Priestly Benediction)

This parsha includes commandments to create cities of refugee โ€” cities where everyone knows that everyone has sinned โ€” something to think about right before Rosh Hashana: how can we use Torah to be more open about and accepting our past failures. hadar.org/torah-tefill...

Screenshot of Dave Torah EVEN SO by Rabbi Tali Adler In Torah, when we are lucky, we are given the opportunity to build a different sort of communityโ€”a community much like an ir miklat, where the darkest parts of ourselves are exposed. In engaging in Torah as a community, we create space where we can acknowledge that we are each flawed, that each of us contains mini-monstrosities. We create space where we are invited to speak our inner darkness out loud. And we create communities where we can trust that our community wonโ€™t reject us for our inner weaknesses, but will tell us that yes, we know about this part of you, and we accept you even so. We accept you because, like you, we are flawedโ€”and, like you, we are here because, in Torah, we are striving to be better. May we all be blessed to find the communities that we need to be able to tell the truth about who we are. May we all be blessed to find, in Torah, a refuge.

This also has one of the many commandments to destroy all of sacred spaces of the people of Canaan, which is hard to wrestle with. The Mussar commentary explains how much fear and anxiety is in the text โ€” this is life or death stuff for people who relied on worshipping God to bring the rain.

Rabbi Jen Clayman writes in the Mussar Torah commentary on this parsha When I encounter Torah texts that I find offensive, like Reih's directive to destroy Canaanite religious sites, I ask myself if I can nevertheless learn from the writers' perspective. Here, I am struck by the harsh language regarding the religion of the other. Our translation of the beginning of Deuteronomy 12:2,
